The Invite: A24 Just Dropped the Trailer and Your Next Dinner Party Is Cancelled

Buckle up, because A24 is about to make your most awkward social interaction look like a Disney parade. The official trailer for The Invite just dropped, and it features enough repressed marital rage to power a small city. Olivia Wilde is back in the director’s chair for her third feature, and this time, she is bringing Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton along for the most uncomfortable double date in cinematic history.

The Plot Is a Literal Nightmare

Imagine you are Joe or Angela, played by Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde. Your marriage is basically a dying houseplant, and you are just trying to survive a Tuesday. You decide to invite the upstairs neighbors over for a little neighborhood bonding. Big mistake. Huge. The neighbors, Pína and Hawk, played by the effortlessly cool Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, aren’t just there for the appetizers. They are there with a very specific, very spicy proposal that threatens to either save Joe and Angela’s marriage or burn their entire apartment building to the ground.

Why This Cast Is Top-Tier

Seeing Seth Rogen in a serious, albeit darkly funny, chamber drama is the vibe shift we didn’t know we needed. He plays the confused, slightly overwhelmed husband to Wilde’s high-strung Angela. On the other side of the table, you have Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton playing the “enigmatic” neighbors who clearly have no boundaries and probably own a lot of silk bedding. The chemistry is reportedly electric, and the trailer teases a night of drinking, flirting, and psychological warfare that makes Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? look like a playground dispute.

It’s a Remake With an Pedigree

If the plot sounds familiar, that is because it is an English-language remake of the 2020 Spanish hit The People Upstairs. The script comes from the brilliant minds of Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, the duo who gave us Celeste & Jesse Forever. They specialize in that “laugh until you realize you’re actually crying” brand of humor. A24 reportedly won a massive bidding war for this flick after it premiered at Sundance, where it currently holds a massive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

When Is It Out?

The movie is officially hitting theaters on June 26, 2026. It is rated R for sexual content, language, and drug use, so maybe don’t bring your parents unless you want the car ride home to be extremely quiet. Wilde shot the whole thing in just 23 days in chronological order, which usually means the actors were actually losing their minds by the end of the shoot. We love that for them.

If you like movies where people scream at each other in expensive kitchens while drinking expensive wine, this is your Super Bowl. It is a sharp, raw, and hilarious look at why we should probably all just stop talking to our neighbors and stay inside forever. A24 has another banger on their hands, and honestly, we are just here for the Edward Norton and Seth Rogen showdown we never saw coming.
