There’s a wild bit of confusion going on with the title The Mummy (2026 film). Here’s all that we know right now, and why there’s buzz. Or maybe even some “Wait, what?” around whether Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are really coming back. Spoiler: Nothing is set in stone… yet. So let us drive straight into it!
What is “The Mummy (2026)” at least officially?

As of November 2025, The Mummy (2026 film) is an upcoming supernatural horror film written and directed by Lee Cronin. It’s produced by a dream-team of horror big-shots: Blumhouse Productions, Atomic Monster and Cronin’s own production banner, for New Line Cinema.
As of now, the confirmed cast includes actors like Jack Reynor and Laia Costa, along with supporting cast such as Verónica Falcón and May Calamawy. The movie is slated to release in the US on April 17, 2026 and notably, this version won’t be from the original studio behind the old Mummy adventures: it will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
So… where do Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz come in?

That’s the tricky and slightly messy part. Several high-profile outlets (and trade reports) have claimed that a new installment of the classic “Mummy” series, sometimes being called “The Mummy 4”, is in the works at Universal Pictures. That too with Fraser and Weisz reportedly in talks to return as their original 1999 characters, Rick and Evelyn O’Connell.
This “new Mummy sequel” would be directed by the duo known as Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett), with a script by David Coggeshall. The idea, according to early reports, is that this would ignore the events of the third movie in the old series (2008’s “Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”). Hence, it will be a “true sequel” to the first two films.
So yes, there are talks about a version of a “Mummy comeback” starring Fraser & Weisz. But there’s a catch…
The Big Confusing Part: Two different “New Mummy” films?

As of now, there are two different Mummy-related projects floating in development:
- The official 2026 “The Mummy (2026 film)” is being made by Lee Cronin. A fresh supernatural horror reboot.
- A separate new “Mummy” sequel (in talks at Universal) that would continue the 1999–2001 storyline of Fraser & Weisz.
The publicly available official information (cast, release date, studio) only aligns with Lee Cronin’s reboot — not with the return of Fraser & Weisz. At least nothing is really confirmed yet for the Universal project. In short, it’s not yet clear if the Fraser/Weisz movie ever gets made, or if it will share the “2026 film” title.
Some insiders suggest that Universal might even drop or delay their version depending on how Cronin’s reboot is shaping up.
Conclusion: Will The Duo Return?
Not quite. As of now, the only official “The Mummy (2026)” project is the reboot from Lee Cronin. And it does not involve Fraser or Weisz. The universe whispering about Brendan and Rachel returning comes from separate trade-rumor reports about a potential new sequel from Universal.
In other words: yes, there’s talk. But nothing’s really confirmed.
