Donkey Kong introduced Nintendo’s mascot- Mario in July of 1981. After that it got his own game under the Nintendo banner. The arcade game Mario Bros. came out in 1983 which had Mario as one of the primary characters in the game. The successor of this game was Super Mario Bros. that came out in 1985. The success of these games lead to the games being converted into a franchise. It is now the central series of the greater franchise. At least one SM game has been released for every major Nintendo video game console. The success and influence of this game has been undeniable on pop culture. The game has been very impressionable on 90s kids. So much so that it became a huge IP, even outside the games.
The movies started to come, the first one being in 1993 – Super Mario Bros. Now films were always a hit or a miss. So, for a while we’ve not been getting any Mario film until it was announced that there is a new movie which would by definition would be reboot is coming out next year. What was surprising is the cast that the film has, especially Chris Pratt playing Mario and Anya Taylor-Joy plays Princess Peach. The film released its first teaser at the New York Comic Con. The teaser had an overall positive reaction except for Chris Pratt’s voice as Mario. As that is an extremely big part of the film, it went all downhill from there as the film was relentlessly trolled. Months after this mess, the makers of the film have released the official trailer for the film.
Super Mario Bros. Movie’s Trailer Introduces Princess Peach!
The Super Mario Bros trailer is much more expansive than the teaser that we’d gotten. The teaser showed us Bowser and his evil plan, after which we got our first look on Mario voiced by Chris Pratt and then we got our first glance at Mario’s brother-Luigi. However, the trailer shows us Princess Peach who is played by Anya Taylor Joy. She is quite similar to her appearance in the game. All the characters in the trailer look spitting image of their game counterparts. The animation of the trailer looks quite apt and it promises an interesting movie watching experience.
However, if you had problem with Chris Pratt’s voice as Mario then I don’t think so this trailer will change your mind. I’ve no emotional or nostalgic connection for the game. So, I can very much understand why fans might be unhappy and it is valid that they express their disappointment so that the film’s creators know. I understand the notion amongst fans that it feels like Chris Pratt is not even trying to give us a Mario voice which is distinctive. It feels like he is voicing Mario as any other character.
