A new Wes Anderson project is around the block and we cannot contain our excitement. After Asteroid City, this would be his second “movie” this year. In a star-studded short called The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar based on a short story by Roald Dahl, Anderson is supposed to direct three other shorts based on stories by Dahl, but there have been no official announcements regarding the same. A new poster for the film was released today, which you should definitely check out.

What is The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar About?

The story by Roald Dahl follows a rich man who finds out about a guru who can see without using his eyes, and decides to develop this skill in order to become a master at gambling. The film was shot on 16mm, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes and others for a period of 39 minutes. Anderson does not count this as a feature because of the short run time. He also stated that the Dahl family had kept the story aside for him to develop, but then things had changed.

“So I had this waiting for me. But I really couldn’t figure out the approach,” Anderson said. “I knew what I liked in the story was the writing of it, Dahl’s words. I couldn’t find the answer, and then suddenly I did. It’s not a feature film. It’s like 37 minutes or something. But by the time I was ready to do it, the Dahl family no longer had the rights at all. They had sold the whole deal to Netflix.”

Anderson also said, “Suddenly, in essence, there was nowhere else you could do it since they own it. But beyond it, because it’s a 37-minute movie, it was the perfect place to do it because it’s not really a movie. You know they used to do these BBC things called Play for Today directed by people like Steven Frears and John Schlesinger and Alan Clarke. They were one hour programs or even less. I kind of  envisioned something like that.”

The short releases on Netflix on September 27, while premiering at the Venice Film Festival on September 1.
