Tom Cruise Gets Weird And Wonderful In New Digger Teaser

Tom Cruise is officially shaking up Hollywood vibes with a teaser that feels delightfully odd and wildly intriguing. The Mission Impossible legend has shared the first look at his next movie, Digger, a comedy directed by four-time Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu. This isn’t more explosions or life-defying stunts. This is Tom Cruise dancing with a shovel, and honestly, we can’t look away.

A Full Stop On Action Movies (Well, Sort Of)

After years of playing Ethan Hunt and Maverick, Cruise is stepping out of pure action territory with Digger. This marks his first role outside of the Mission Impossible and Top Gun franchises in a long time. The teaser that dropped on December 18, 2025, gives fans a taste of a totally different Cruise energy — goofy, weirdly charming, and yes, wielding a shovel like it’s the instrument of destiny.

So, What’s Digger Actually About?

Official plot specifics are still under wraps, but the early logline reveals an utterly wild premise: Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, reportedly the most powerful man in the world, who goes on a frantic race to prove he can save humanity before a disaster he caused wipes everything out. The teaser leans into the bizarre side of that setup with scenes of Cruise dancing on a boardwalk and doing some why-is-this-happening moves with his shovel.

It’s being billed as a comedy of catastrophic proportions, and honestly, that tagline fits. The tone seems to slap together darkness, absurdity, and heartfelt chaos in true Iñárritu style.

Iñárritu + Cruise = Biggest Plot Twist Of The Year

Alejandro G. Iñárritu is known for heavy hitters like The Revenant and Birdman. This new movie represents his first English-language film since The Revenant, and his first-ever collaboration with Cruise. That alone is huge. Iñárritu co-wrote Digger with a team that includes Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris Jr., and Nicolás Giacobone, the latter two of whom worked with him on Birdman.

Rather than action sequences and daredevil moments, fans can probably expect Iñárritu’s signature blend of emotional depth and creative visual storytelling, just with laughs and chaos baked in.

A Cast As Quirky As The Teaser

Beyond Cruise’s shovel antics, Digger features an ensemble cast worth bookmarking. Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Robert John Burke, and Burn Gorman. All join the madness, bringing serious talent to what might be the oddest big studio comedy in years.

Warner Bros. has locked Digger for release on October 2, 2026. That places it in prime fall cinema season, perfect for awards buzz and water-cooler chatter alike. Given Cruise’s recent honorary Oscar and Iñárritu’s award pedigree, some are already speculating this could be more than just a goofy teaser moment.
