2022 was a year full of amazing and mediocre movies at the same time. We saw some of the best movies after the pandemic in this redefining year. The year might’ve started slow, but it picked right up in the summer when Top Gun: Maverick set the box office on fire. There were many more films which contributed to the terrific summer we witnessed. Last year wasn’t the best for the MCU though, as no film crossed the $1 billion mark. The year ended with the biggest blockbuster of this decade – Avatar: The Way of Water. However, one has to understand that the best movies of the year may not be the most profitable ones. So, here is the list of films which made the biggest buck at the box office. These may not be the best films of the year.
The Most Profitable Of 2022!
10. SMILE: Perhaps the most profitable horror film of last year. Paramount’s Smile got great reviews and had a production budget of only $17 million. Even after adding everything the film was able to churn out a profit of more than $100 million. These are the statistics:
- Box Office: $217.4 million
- Revenue: $208 million
- Expenses: $107 million
- Profit: $101 million
9. THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER: One of the worst movies of the year perhaps the worst film the MCU has ever produced. I’m still upset with this film. However, as it is a Thor film and thanks to the fanbase that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has gathered the film made an immense profit. Here are the statistics:
- Box Office: $760.9 million
- Revenue: $650 million
- Expenses: $547 million
- Profit: $103 million
8. Puss In Boots: The Last Wish– A sequel that no was expecting to be this good. The first film in this extended Shrek universe was fine but in the sequel Dreamworks really pulled up their socks and gave us the best animated film of the year. Despite having to compete with Avatar: The Way of Water, The Last Wish did great at the box office. Here are the statistics:
- Box Office: $478.7 million
- Revenue: $440 million
- Expenses: $319.8 million
- Profit: $120.2 million
7. The Batman: Weirdly, the best superhero film of the previous year because all the MCU films were absolute trash. The Batman gave us a reimagining of Batman in the darkest adaptation of Gotham ever to be seen in cinema. Given the hype that surrounds around every Batman film, this reboot was bound to leave a mark at the box office. Here are the statistics:
- Box Office: $770.9 million
- Revenue: $635 million
- Expenses: $458 million
- Profit: $177 million
6. Jurassic World: Dominion– Another atrocious film on the list. This was also in my worst films of the year list. However, we all knew this threequel was definitely going to generate a profit at the box office given that it belongs to a big IP like Jurassic Park. Here are the stastics:
- Box Office: $1 billion
- Revenue: $750 million
- Expenses: $520.3 million
- Profit: $229.7 million
5. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever– Another MCU on the list. Unfortunately this is another sequel which was disappointing to witness last year. I’m equally saddened by Chadwick Boseman’s death but as a film Wakanda Forever was very weak. However, it was a sequel to one of the biggest films of 2018 hence, the success. Here are the statistics:
- Box Office: $859 million
- Revenue: $750 million
- Expenses: $491 million
- Profit: $259 million
4. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: Probably the best film Marvel came out with last year. However, the quality of the film wasn’t able to match the hype of the film. The film could’ve easily passed $1 billion at the box office but the poor reviews prevented it. Here are the statistics:
- Box Office: $955.7 million
- Revenue: $780 million
- Expenses: $496 million
- Profit: $284 million
3. Minions: The Rise of Gru– Another unneeded and probably unwanted prequel belonging to a strong IP that did well at the box office. The Rise of Gru was nothing special but under the Minions tag did excellently well at the box office. Here are the statistics:
- Box Office: $939.6 million
- Revenue: $750 million
- Expenses: $368 million
- Profit: $382 million
2. Top Gun: Maverick– One of the absolute best of the year probably the best on multiple views. This was not on my radar and I didn’t expect it to be this good. This film’s success came during the second half of its run which was only because of the quality it offered. Here are the statistics:
- Box Office: $1.49 billion
- Revenue: $1.15 billion
- Expenses: $753.9
- Profit: $391.1 million
1. Avatar: The Way of Water– Of course, who else do you think was going to top this list? It has to be the James Cameron’s sequel. Despite having the biggest budget of all time, the sequel managed to have biggest profit collection of the year. Here are the statistics:
- Box Office: $2.32 billion
- Revenue: $1.62 billion
- Expenses: $1.09 billion
- Profit: $531.7 million
