Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce follows Abby McCarthy, an author in her 40s who just ended her relationship with her husband. As her world starts to collapse, she finds comfort in her new girlfriends. Even though the show is referred to as comedy, it carries an emotional weight to it. The show explores the strength of friendships and facing your fears. Lisa Edelstein plays the role of Abby McCarthy.
Insecure (2016)
Insecure focuses on the Black female experience from the viewpoint of two female protagonists, Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji). The duo have been best friends since their college days at Stanford. They navigate relationships and careers while living in their hometown California. Molly is a corporate attorney with a successful career but her dating life is never fun. Issa works at a non-profit organization “We Got Y’all” that helps middle-aged students of color. She struggles to maintain her relationship with her long-term boyfriend Lawrence (Jay Ellis) who has been slacking since his start-up company failed. They share a close bond throughout the show and deal with internal struggles of friendship and the African-American community.
Emily in Paris (2020)
Emily in Paris is a romantic comedy-drama. The show focuses on the central character Emily Cooper (Lily Collins), an American with a master’s degree in communications. She moves to Paris for a work opportunity. Her task at her new job is to bring an American perspective and social media presence to a French marketing firm. She faces a cultural clash as she tries to adjust to her life in Paris while juggling her career, love life, and newly formed friendships.
Sweet Magnolias (2020)
Sweet Magnolias is a romantic drama based on Sherryl Woods’ Sweet Magnolias books. It follows the story of “three South Carolina women, best friends since childhood, as they shepherd each other through the complexities of romance, career, and family.” JoAnna Garcia Swisher stars as Maddie, Brooke Elliott as Dana, and Heather Headley plays Helen.
