Top Gun Maverick Should Eye $1 Billion Box Office Collection to Beat the Original

In Tom Cruise’s filmography, Top Gun might be one of the least likely films to get a sequel. However that changed this year when we got Top Gun: Maverick, a direct sequel to the 1986 film released this year. It took Paramount almost 36 years to make Top Gun: Maverick. While the sequel for it was in the works for a long time, it never seem to have cohesively work out. Initially, Paramount had plans to bring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer back with director Tony Scott for the sequel in 2010. However, the tragic suicide of the director in 2012 pressed a long break on the project. It wasn’t until 2017 when Joseph Kosinski came on board to helm the sequel. The principal photography for Top Gun: Maverick finally kicked off in mid 2018 and would continue till early 2019 with plans to release it in July 2019. However, the Covid-19 pandemic had different plans. With multiple delays and reshoots, Maverick finally returned on May 27th 2022 and boy was it worth it.

The film enjoyed a massive box office surge despite the skepticism of audiences regarding theatres. It was lauded by the critics for its great action sequences and most importantly the emotional weight carried by the film. A lot of people found it better than the original including me. Paramount is enjoying the box office success of Maverick of about $1.4 Billion worldwide, even if the film is available on digital, it looks like the film still has some more money to make at the Box Office and it is not tired of shattering previous records. The sequel beat Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War on the Domestic Box Office and a month later overtook Black Panther as well, becoming the fifth highest grossing film of all time on the domestic box office. Today the sequel has crossed another milestone that was being held for a long time.

Top Gun: Maverick Beats Frozen 2!

Top Gun: Maverick has been slowly creeping up the ladder to beat a lot of big movies, both at the domestic box office and the international box office. Most recently the film overtook Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron at the international box office and was only second to Frozen II when it came to the highest grossing Part 2 film. Frozen II’s lifetime collection worldwide is $1,450,026,933. Maverick is now at the end of its Box Office run and still the film hung around enough get the final laurel in its crown.

Top Gun: Maverick has now made $1,455,304,523 internationally thanks to its strong domestic box office collections. Maverick is the fifth highest grossing film on the domestic box office and 11th internationally. I would like to say that the film may enter in the Top 10 list but for that it has to beat Furious 7 which has a lifetime collection of $1.515 Billion that is almost $60 Million more than what Maverick has. At this stage, unless Paramount employs some great marketing hack the film is not beating Furious 7.

Even if the film is released on Digital, the film has managed to complete the distance between itself and Frozen II. It is amazing to see a film with such a small IP making so much money just based on its quality. Except for Avatar: The Way of Water and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, I don’t see any other film coming close to its Box Office success. The film now has $707.5 Million on the domestic box office. I don’t think its going to climb the ladder further as to get to the 4th spot it has to beat Avatar.

For that too it has to gross another $52.5 Million so I think on both international and domestic box office Maverick isn’t climbing any higher. Top Gun: Maverick remains the highest grossing film of the year and for me the best film of 2022, tied with Barbarian.

Check out Top Gun: Maverick in theatres in near you and the film was available on Digital from 23rd August 2022.
