Among Tom Cruise’s many known franchises, Top Gun might be less known but the direct sequel to the 1986 film released this year. It took Paramount almost 36 years to make Top Gun: Maverick. While the sequel for it was in the works for a long time, it never seem to have cohesively work out. Initially, Paramount had plans to bring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer back with director Tony Scott for the sequel in 2010. However, the tragic suicide of the director in 2012 pressed a long break on the project. It wasn’t until 2017 when Joseph Kosinski came on board to helm the sequel. The principal photography for Top Gun: Maverick finally kicked off in mid 2018 and would continue till early 2019 with plans to release it in July 2019. However, the Covid-19 pandemic had different plans.
With multiple delays and reshoots, Maverick finally returned on May 27th 2022 and boy was it worth it. The film enjoyed a massive box office surge despite the skepticism of audiences regarding theatres. It was lauded by the critics for its great action sequences and most importantly the emotional weight carried by the film. A lot of people found it better than the original including me. Paramount is enjoying the box office success of Maverick of about $1.4 Billion worldwide, even if the film is available on digital, it looks like the film still has some more money to make at the Box Office and it is not tired of shattering previous records. Just last month, the sequel beat Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War on the Domestic Box Office but today the film has passed another Marvel film and it’s a big one.
Top Gun: Maverick Becomes the 5th Highest Grossing Film of All Time?
Top Gun: Maverick being released in the summer along with other Box Office biggies like Jurassic World: Dominion and Minions: Rise of Gru but unlike these other films, Maverick has continued to thrive through all kinds of competition and still rise to the top. Maverick has broken many records despite not being of a huge IP. The sequel that is probably at the very end of its box office run has managed to break two records and one of them is a big one.
This holiday weekend we got a re-release of Spider-Man: No Way Home or rather Spider-Man: No Way Home The More Fun Stuff Version with 10 minutes of unseen footages. Top Gun: Maverick beat Spider-Man: No Way Home and became #1 movie on the Labor Day Weekend. The Top Gun sequel added another $7 Million to its huge box office collection making its domestic box office cume to $701.23 Million. Yes, that means Maverick has finally passed Black Panther on the domestic box office.
Black Panther for a long time has been sitting on the top 5 highest grossing films (domestic). Black Panther had grossed $700.4 Million in North America alone. Now, Top Gun: Maverick ($701.23 Million) sits amongst the highest grossing films of all time at the domestic box office with Avatar ($760 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($804 million), Avengers: Endgame ($859 million) and sitting at the golden throne- Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million), yep this film is pretty much unbeatable.
Can Maverick achieve another Milestone?
Now that Maverick has achieved its domestic box office hall of fame, there is another jewel that awaits to be attached in its crown. Along with performing amazingly on domestically, the sequel is also performing well internationally. Top Gun: Maverick currently has grossed $1.441 Billion worldwide. That’s great but if the film just pushes a bit more it has a chance to become biggest ‘part two’ sequel ever. It’s currently behind 2019’s Frozen II which has $1.45 Billion. Top Gun: Maverick is only $9 Million behind Frozen.
Even if the film is released on Digital, the film has enough potential to make the distance between itself and Frozen II. It is amazing to see a film with small IP making so much money just based on its quality. Except for Avatar: The Way of Water and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, I don’t see any other film coming close to its Box Office success. Top Gun: Maverick remains the highest grossing film of the year and for me the best film of 2022, yet.
Check out Top Gun: Maverick in theatres in near you and the film was available on Digital from 23rd August 2022.
