October is here and there are several releases this month to look forward to. From the supernatural horror film Exorcist to the epic Western crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon starring Leonardo DiCaprio, multiple films will feed your film fascination. Here is a list of the top movies released in theatres and OTT in October 2023.
The Exorcist: Believer (October 6)
Directed by David Gordon The Exorcist: Believer is a supernatural horror film. This sixth installment of the Exorcist franchise stars Ellen Burstyn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jennifer Nettles, Ann Dowd, and more. The parents of demonically possessed girls are in desperate need of help. They are searching for the only living person who has had the same experiences – Chris MacNeil.
Dumb Money (October 6)
Dumb Money is based on Ben Mezrich’s 2021 book The Antisocial Network and chronicles the GameStop short squeeze. This 2023 biographical comedy-drama film is written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo and directed by Craig Gillespie. It stars Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, America Ferrera, Sebastian Stan, Seth Rogen, Vincent D’Onofrio, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, and Shailene Woodley. People on Wall Street get rich every day by turning GameStop into one of the hottest companies in the world. Amidst everything there is regular guy Keith Gill who begins by investing all his savings into the stock. With his social media, his life starts elevating and everyone follows him. Everyone gets rich until the billionaires fight back and both parties find their worlds turned upside down.
The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (October 6, Showtime)
Directed by William Friedkin, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial is a 2023 American legal drama. It is adapted from Herman Wouk’s 1953 play of the same name and itself based on Wouk’s 1952 novel The Caine Mutiny. The film stars Kiefer Sutherland, Jake Lacy, Jason Clarke, Lance Reddick, and Monica Raymund. When a U.S. naval captain shows hints of instability that jeopardizes his ship, the first officer relieves him and faces court-martial for mutiny. A lawyer named Greenwald defends the navy officer, Maryk who took control from the main captain, Queeg. The court martial proceeds and questions if the Caine were a true mutiny or just a gallant act of a group of sailors that could not trust their leader.
Foe (October 6)
Based on Iain Reid’s 2018 novel ‘Foe’ and directed by Garth Davis, Foe is a sci-fi psychological thriller. The film stars Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal, and Aaron Pierre. When a stranger intervenes the lives of a married couple turn into a roller-coaster ride. The strangers arrive at their farm to inform them that the man will be sent to a large space station. His wife will be in the company of a robot.
Pet Sematary: Bloodlines (October 6, Paramount+)
Based on Stephen King’s 1983 novel of the same name, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is directed by Lindsey Anderson Beer. The film stars Jackson White, Forrest Goodluck, Jack Mulhern, Henry Thomas, Natale Alyn Lind, Isabella Star LaBlanc, Samantha Mathis, Pam Grier, and David Duchovny. Set in 1969, fifty years before the events of the previous film. The story follows Jud Crandall as he discovers a cemetery where the dead can live again.
She Came to Me (October 6)
The romantic comedy film She Came to Me was written and directed by Rebecca Miller. The film stars Peter Dinklage, Marisa Tomei, Joanna Kulig, Brian d’Arcy James, and Anne Hathaway. Composer Steven Lauddem is creatively blocked and is not able to end the score for his comeback opera. At the behest of his wife Patricia, Lauddem sets out to look for inspiration.
Dicks: The Musical (October 6)
Directed by Larry Charles Dicks: The Musical is a musical comedy film. Two adversaries realize they’re identical twin brothers, Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson. They decide to switch places to reunite with their divorced parents so they can be a whole family again. The film stars Josh Sharp, Aaron Jackson, Megan Thee Stallion, Bowen Yang, Nathan Lane, and Megan Mullally.
The Burial (October 13, Prime Video)
American legal drama The Burial is directed by Maggie Betts. The film is loosely based on the true story of Willie E. Gary and his client Jeremiah Joseph O’Keefe’s lawsuit against the Loewen funeral company. It star Jamie Foxx, Tommy Lee Jones, Mamoudou Athie, Jurnee Smollett, and Bill Camp. Set in 1995, Gary helps financially troubled funeral home owner Jeremiah sue a large funeral company. Gary won a $500 million jury verdict and the Loewen Group filed for bankruptcy.
The Pigeon Tunnel (October 20)
Directed by Errol Morris, the British documentary film The Pigeon Tunnel follows the life and career of John le Carré. The film had its world premiere at the 50th Telluride Film Festival on 1 September 2023.
Killers of the Flower Moon (October 20)
2023 American epic Western crime drama film Killers of the Flower Moon stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert de Niro, Lily Gladstone, and more. Based on David Grann’s 2017 book the film is directed by Martin Scorsese. In the 1920s the members of the Osage tribe in northeastern Oklahoma were killed under enigmatic circumstances. It sparked a major BOI investigation directed by J. Hoover and Tom White.
Freelance (October 27)
The upcoming American action-comedy film is directed by Pierre Morel. Freelance stars John Cena, Alison Brie, Juan Pablo Raba, Alice Eve, Christian Slater, and Marton Csokas. Years after retiring from the Army, Mason Pettits interviews the president of Paldonia, Juan Venegas. When a military coup breaks out in the middle of this interview they are forced to escape into the jungle.
Five Nights at Freddy’s (October 27)
The supernatural horror film Five Nights at Freddy’s is directed by Emma Tammi and based on the video game franchise of the same name. The film stars Josh Hutcherson, Mary Stuart Masterson, Elizabeth Lali, Matthew Lillard, and Piper Rubio. A troubled security guard Mike Schmidt accepts a night-time job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. It is a once-successful however, now abandoned entertainment center where he discovers its four animatronic mascots – Freddy Fazbear, Chica, Bonnie, and Foxy. The mascots move and kill anyone who is out after midnight.
Pain Hustlers (October 27, Netflix)
American crime drama film Pain Hustlers is based on Evan Hughes’s book of the same name. The film stars Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Andy García, Catherine O’Hara, Jay Duplass, Brian d’Arcy James, and Chloe Coleman. It follows high school dropout Liza Drake who lands a job with a failing pharmaceutical company. And, she soon finds herself at the core of a criminal conspiracy with lethal consequences.
