Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play written by Jack Thorne in collaboration with J.K. Rowling. The story is set 19 years after the events of The Deathly Hallows and is about Potter’s son Albus who is trying to live up to his father’s legacy. Albus joins Draco Malfoy’s son Scorpius in a time hopping adventure in order to be worthy. Despite not being an official entry into the Harry Potter novel series, Rowling has called the play, “the eighth Harry Potter story.” After the Harry Potter movies finally wrapped in 2011 with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two, the Wizarding World was silent until Warner Bros. greenlit the Fantastic Beasts movies. So, considering Warner Bros. is interested in more Harry Potter content, many rumors are claiming that there is a ninth Harry Potter film in development that will adapt Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – Are We Getting 9th Film?
Before we got the official confirmation that Warner Bros. is developing a new Harry Potter TV series, many reports claimed that WB is planning a ninth Harry Potter film that will adapt the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play. These reports mainly started after a viral concept trailer from Teaser PRO, with the footage included from past Wizarding World flicks and other more recent releases featuring the franchise’s main talent. The movie was reported to be in development and would’ve hit theatres in 2025.
However, these were simply rumors and there is no Harry Potter movie in development. Although, there were some raw discussions on the matter. According to a report from Puck’s Matt Belloni, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy were once planning to “go hard” in pursuit of an adaptation of The Cursed Child. The reason these discussions didn’t amount to anything was Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson’s aversion to return as Harry Potter and Hermoine Granger respectively, due to the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling.
Ron Weasley on the other hand, showed interest to return. He said, “Yeah, I think if the timing was right and everyone was kinda coming back I’d definitely revisit it. It’s a character that’s important to me. I kinda grew up and we kinda became the same person. I feel quite protective of him as well.”
Meanwhile Radcliffe had a diplomatic stance on his franchise return, “This isn’t the answer that anybody’s going to want, but I think I was so able to go back and enjoy it because it’s not a part of my day-to-day life anymore. I’m getting to a point where I feel like I made it out of ‘Potter’ OK and I’m really happy with where I am now, and to go back would be such a massive change to my life. I’m never going to say never, but the ‘Star Wars’ guys had like 30, 40 years before they went back. For me, it’s only been 10. It’s not something I’m really interested in doing right now.”
