The Zone of Interest is an A24 production and it is a film that has been generating good buzz ever since its release. The buzz is purely on the quality of the film as no big names are attached to it. Many people have also referred to the film as one of A24’s best from the 2023 slate. Written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, the film focuses on the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife, Hedwig, who strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp. Just reading the premise gives me chills. Given the overcrowded weekends of December, it is natural that you missed this underrated masterpiece in theatres.
Or if you’re someone like me who lives in India, then you had no way of watching this film at all. Regardless of which category you fall in, you don’t need worry now as The Zone of Interest is making its digital debut soon.
The Zone of Interest Finally Sets Its Digital Debut!
According to a new listing on dvdreleasedates, The Zone of Interest will arrive on digital platforms like Vudu, Amazon Prime Video and Apple iTunes for purchase or rent on February 20th, 2024. As an A24 production, the theatre to digital gap of 67 days makes sense. Being an indie venture with no famous face attached, The Zone of Interest struggled at the box office.
Made on a budget of $15 million, the Jonathan Glazer directorial only earned $5.2 million at the box office until now. However, the Sandra Hüller starrer is yet to release in some major international markets which should bulk up that box office figure. The film is based on a 2014 novel by Martin Amis of the same name. Ever since its release, The Zone of Interest has had a dream critical reception.
At the time of writing, the film has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 92% from 274 reviews (Audience score: 80%) and an IMDb score of 7.9/10. Written and directed by Jonathan Glazer (his most credit: Under the Skin), The Zone of Interest stars Sandra Hüller, Christian Friedel, Marie Rosa Tietjen, Johann Karthaus, Daniel Holzberg, Ralph Herforth and Medusa Knopf.
The Zone of Interest initially premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2023 and contended for the prestigious Palm d’Or but eventually lost to another Sandra Hüller starrer – Anatomy of a Fall. The film was also screened at the London Film Festival last week where it won won best picture and best director. The glory doesn’t stop here as the film has also been nominated for five Oscars – Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best International Feature Film, Best Sound and Best Picture.
The Zone of Interest released in theatres on December 15th, 2023.
