The desert of Arrakis is about to get even stranger. The upcoming film Dune 3, directed by Denis Villeneuve, will close the epic sci-fi trilogy that began with Dune in 2021 and continued with Dune: Part Two in 2024. The story again centers on Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, now ruling as emperor after the dramatic events of the previous film. But while sitting with Matthew McCoughney at Variety’s Town Hall event, Chalamet himself discussed his role in the third movie will feel very different from what audiences saw before. He has already described it as the “eeriest” entry of the trilogy, hinting at a darker, more unsettling direction for the finale. Let’s get into this.
A Darker Story Inspired by Dune Messiah

Unlike the first two films, which adapt the original novel by Frank Herbert, the third movie draws from the sequel Dune Messiah. This shift changes the tone of the story dramatically. The narrative jumps forward in time and shows Paul Atreides as a powerful emperor who must deal with the consequences of the religious war fought in his name. Billions have died during the galaxy-wide jihad launched by his followers. Instead of focusing on a hero rising to power, the story examines what happens after that victory.
The result is a much heavier and more introspective plot. Political conspiracies grow around Paul. Enemies form alliances to destroy him. And he struggles with the moral weight of the empire he created. That emotional darkness is one major reason the film carries an eerie tone.
Paul Atreides Becomes a Haunted Leader in Dune 3

Another reason for the eerie atmosphere is the transformation of Paul himself. In the earlier movies, Paul is a young noble learning to survive on Arrakis. By the third film, he is older and shaped by years of leadership and war.
Chalamet explained that his character now carries the psychological burden of ruling the universe and the guilt of the violence carried out in his name. The actor even said he approached the role with greater intensity this time, pushing himself harder because it would be his final appearance in the franchise. That emotional weight gives the story a haunting feeling. Paul is not simply a hero anymore. He is a leader trapped by prophecy and power.
A Creative “Big Swing” for the Series

Chalamet also called the film “a big swing.” In blockbuster terms, that usually means taking risks instead of repeating what worked before.
The actor said that by the third film, he felt more confident working inside Villeneuve’s futuristic universe. That freedom allowed him to experiment more with the performance. He even mentioned drawing inspiration from legendary cinematic performances, such as those by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight and Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now.
The goal was to add strange and unexpected moments inside a huge spectacle. Hence, the film might look like a giant space epic, but inside it may feel quieter, darker, and emotionally unsettling.
If the first two films were about destiny and revolution, the final chapter may explore something even more unsettling. What even happens when the chosen hero realizes that becoming a legend might have been the worst possible future?
No wonder Chalamet describes his character’s conclusion as a haunting one.
