Disney’s upcoming movie Wish is reviving the studio’s animation traditions. Slated to release this November, the movie is set in a kingdom where people’s wishes can be granted, but only by King Magnifico, who is against fulfilling the majority of his subject’s desires. 17-year-old Asha is horrified to learn this when she becomes King Magnifico’s apprentice. Bothered by this knowledge, she makes a wish on a shooting star, and judging by the influx of living stars and a talking goat, this leads to chaos.
Disney’s Wish is the First 2D Animation Movie Since 2011
The trailer features a comical voice performance from Chris Pine, a stunning song from Ariana DeBose, and plenty of whimsical sequences. Wish’s animation has stirred up conversations online, partly because the studio takes a new approach that fans haven’t seen for about 12 years. The last project to use 2D animation was Winnie the Pooh (2011). Wish is not entirely 2D, it’s a blend of 2D and 3D animation. By blending both, the studio is offering the best of both worlds to the fans. This decision might work in favor of Disney, especially if they want to stay relevant among competitors like Illumination and DreamWorks.
Considering the fact that Disney hasn’t incorporated 2D animation into any of its releases since 2011, Wish’s style offers a breath of fresh air. Mixing 2D and 3D allows Disney to experiment with an all-new animation style proving that Disney is still a creative leader in the industry. If Disney’s Wish becomes a successful hit, fans may see more blended animation in Disney’s future projects.
