Wonka 2 update!

I think it is fair to say that out of all the films that released in the crowded month of December last year, Paul King’s spin-off called Wonka has emerged as the clear winner. I’m aware that there are more films that have become sleeper hits like Anyone But You, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Migration, Poor Things, etc. but Wonka stole the show from the rest. Made on a budget of $125 million, the Paul King directorial has grossed a massive $609.1 million at the end of its theatrical stint. Naturally after such overwhelming success, Warner Bros. smells a brewing sequel in the mix. So, the studio wants a Wonka 2 and it looks like Paul King is interested as well.

Wonka 2: Paul King Is Interested, Will Timothée Chalamet Return?

Following Wonka’s unprecedented success, Warner Bros. wants a sequel from director Paul King and it appears that the director himself is interested as well. King is no stranger to sequels. He made Paddington and then Paddington 2, where many argue that the sequel was better than the first. Considering this, it is no surprise that the talented filmmaker wants to take this franchise forward with a Wonka 2.

This update comes courtesy of @HollywoodHandle’s X account. However, the update didn’t feature one major question – will Timothée Chalamet return for the sequel? Considering the type of actor Chalamet is, he won’t be delighted to be tied to a franchise. His inclusion in the Dune franchise is different though, as those films started with the idea of covering the arc of Paul Atreides.

So, when it comes to Wonka, will Chalamet reprise his role? We don’t have an official answer to that question but during an interview with ET Online in December 2023, the actor was asked about a sequel possibility for Wonka and this is what he had to say. He said, “If there was a story to be told. And evidently there is.” He further added, Something twisted happens … I don’t know how we started like this and end there — I don’t know what the story is.”

Well, Paul King definitely feels there’s more story to explore so I think it is just a matter of time before Chalamet is convinced and the work on Wonka 2 begins.

Wonka is directed by Paul King (Paddington, Paddington 2) and stars Timothée Chalamet in the titular role along with Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Grant and Sally Hawkins. Timothée Chalamet’s Wonka will start streaming on Max soon.
