Many were skeptical of Paul King’s Wonka starring Timothée Chalamet. Skeptics questioned the need of a Wonka origin story. Questions were also raised about Chalamet’s ability to pull of a role like Willy Wonka. However, I think all these questions and skeptics have been silenced by the film, as Wonka has become a critical and commercial success. The film opened up to rave reviews from critics, shocker – Paul King gets it right again. Speaking about finances, a film made on a budget of $125 million, Wonka has earned $151.4 million in its first worldwide opening weekend. These are staggering numbers, if the film continues this trend then Wonka will emerge as the biggest movie of December 2023. What is surprising about the collections is, out of $151.4 million, 112.4 million has come from international markets.
Only $39 million has come from US and Canada, which is on par with the early box office projections. The film is enjoying the holiday season as Wonka happens to be the perfect family friendly experience many are looking forward to at this time. However, if you think you won’t be able catch the film in theatres because of your holiday plans, then don’t worry you will be able to watch Wonka at home, you just have to wait a while. Here’s when Wonka will release online.
Here’s When You Can Watch Wonka Online!
Wonka’s imminent success just proves the stardom and dedication of Timothée Chalamet and the storytelling prowess of a creator like Paul King. Given that Wonka will enjoy long term box office success one might think that its digital debut is way along in the future. Well, that’s not the case. The film is distributed by Warner Bros. and ever since the pandemic, the studio has been overly obsessed to give its films short theatrical runs and milk the digital windows. Warner Bros. movies debut digitally less than a month after their theatrical debut.
The only exception being the billion dollar success, Barbie. However, Warner Bros. seems to have a lot of faith in Wonka as the studio is planning to make the film available for purchase on digital and VOD platforms like Apple iTunes, Amazon Prime Video and Vudu on January 30th, 2024. This is according to a listing found on a reliable website dvdreleases. Meaning Wonka will have a theatre to digital window of 46 days. This is a huge achievement for the Paul King directorial as such a long theatre to digital window is rare for a Warner Bros. production. Here are some the theatre to digital debut window for recent Warner Bros. movies:
- The Flash – 32 days
- Meg 2: The Trench – 21 days
- Evil Dead Rise – 19 days
- Shazam! Fury of the Gods – 32 days
- Barbie – 46 days
Based on this report, Wonka will enjoy a huge theatre to digital window as Barbie. We have no update on Wonka’s physical media and home releases. Naturally, the film won’t be available for streaming till January 30th. The average theatre to streaming window for Warner Bros. movies is 45- 60 days. So, don’t expect Wonka to drop on MAX till February 15th, 2024 at least.
