Zootopia is a 2016 animation film by Disney, its premise surrounds around, “When Judy Hopps, a rookie officer in the Zootopia Police Department, sniffs out a sinister plot, she enlists the help of a con artist to solve the case in order to prove her abilities to Chief Bogo.” The film had a great cast to offer from Jason Bateman, Ginnifer Goodwin, Idris Elba, and Jenny Slate, among many other household Hollywood acting names. The film was one of the most critically acclaimed animated films because of its silliness coupled with adult humour. The mature themes that the film addressed and tackled relevant social issues was praiseworthy. The film also won the Oscar of Best Animated Film that year. Zootopia was a huge financial success as well ($1 Billion+) Now over seven years later Disney plans to make a sequel. Why?
Why is Disney Making Zootopia 2 Now?
At Disney’s quarterly conference call with the investors, CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Zootopia 2 is officially moving forward at Disney. Nothing else about the project was revealed. We don’t even know at what stage of development is the project at. The announcement of the Zootopia sequel was overshadowed by the announcements of Toy Story 5 and Frozen 3. This sudden announcements of the sequels is the result of the number of sequels that we got last year, most of which found box office success.
Namely Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water. Another factor which I think is responsible for greenlighting these sequels is Dreamworks Studios. The reason all these films are getting sequels is because these are Disney’s prime works in the animation department and they’re almost guaranteed box office success. If you have noticed, Universal Studios or Dreamworks is kicking Disney’s or Pixar’s ass at the box office.
All the animated films that have released in that last three years, only three have crossed $150 Million domestically and all of them are Dreamworks’. All the three films including the latest Puss in Boots: The Last Wish have greater global box office numbers as well. Pixar was once the champion of the box office and Dreamworks struggled against it but it seems like the tide has changed. Disney wants to reverse this and hence, I’m guessing all these famous franchises are getting sequels to put Disney back to #1 when it comes to animation films.
Zootopia 2 doesn’t have a release date at the time of writing.
