Grab your Razzles and clear your schedule, because Netflix is officially taking us back to the “Big Time.” More than two decades after Jennifer Garner first taught us the “Thriller” dance, the streaming giant is reviving the 2004 cult classic, 13 Going on 30. This isn’t just a rumor fueled by early 2000s nostalgia. The project is really in active development with a shiny new cast and a very familiar face behind the scenes. Let’s get into it.
The New Jenna and Matty
The search for a new generation of “thriving” adults is over. Emily Bader, the breakout star of My Lady Jane and the Netflix hit People We Meet on Vacation, will step into the lead role originally made famous by Jennifer Garner. Joining her as the dorky best friend turned romantic interest is none other than Logan Lerman.
Lerman, who survived both Percy Jackson’s monsters and the high school drama of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, is officially our new Matty. Fans are already obsessed with this pairing, especially since it reunites Bader with director Brett Haley. This duo previously dominated the Netflix Top 10 together, so the romantic chemistry is basically guaranteed at this point.
Jennifer Garner Is the Ultimate Boss
If you were worried about the reboot losing the magic of the original, take a deep breath. Jennifer Garner is officially on board as an executive producer. While she won’t be playing Jenna Rink this time around, she is helping shape the vision for this reimagining. Garner expressed her excitement about returning to the universe, noting that the character of Jenna remains one of the roles closest to her own personality. Having the original star steer the ship is the ultimate seal of approval for fans who treat the 2004 film like a sacred text.
A Fresh Spin on Magic Dust
While the core “body swap” hook remains, the script is getting a 2026 glow-up. Hannah Marks penned the screenplay, with revisions by Flora Greeson, the writer currently working on The Princess Diaries 3. Reports suggest the story might feature a significant shift in Jenna’s family dynamic. This version of the character is being raised by two dads. It adds a modern twist to her upbringing before she makes that fateful wish to escape the social horrors of middle school.
Director Brett Haley called the original “one of those rare, perfect films,” and he isn’t wrong. The 2004 movie grossed $96 million worldwide and turned Garner into a massive star. Even Mark Ruffalo recently admitted he gets recognized more for his role as Matty than for being the Hulk. Netflix clearly sees the “It factor” in Emily Bader. Now with the original creative DNA involved, they are betting big on this being the next major rom-com franchise.
