It is the time of murder mysteries ever since Knives Out came out and changed the game. A whodunnit was considered to be a dead genre but the new Knives Out movies have revitalized as they provide a modern rendition of the classic Agatha Christie novels. Another franchise in the whodunnit genre apart from Knives Out is Kenneth Branagh’s Poirot movies which actually began two years before Knives Out. However, the weakly adapted screenplays and rushed plots often let the audience down even if Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot was outstanding. Until now two films have come out in this franchise – Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. Both mediocre but had potential to be brilliant. Even after poor critical reception and decent box office performance, the franchise seems to live on as a third film called A Haunting In Venice was announced last year which will be based on Agatha Christie’s Hallowe’en Party. This is great news as I’m a sucker for murder mysteries done well and a whodunnit mounted on such a big budget has potential to be amazing. If the recently released teaser trailer is any indication then the film will be surprisingly dark for the good.

A Haunting In Venice Teaser Trailer Is Surprisingly Dark!

A Haunting In Venice is set in the eerie, post – World War II Venice on a Halloween Eve. This film is supposed to be a terrifying mystery featuring the return of the celebrated sleuth. Hercule Poirot is now retired and has imposed self-exile in the most beautiful city of the world- Venice. One day, he has to reluctantly attend a seance at a deteriorating haunted palazzo after which the inevitable happens- one of the guests gets murdered and Poirot has to enter into the world of secrets and shadows to solve this case.

The trailer for the film looks surprisingly dark and exciting. The first two films had a vibrant and fun vibe to them. The third film is unlike them. It is dark and exciting. We see Michelle Yeoh’s character performing a ritual to call one of the dead souls after which one of them gets killed. The trailer openly shows that there is a ghost haunting the palazzo they’re in. Even Poirot sees her. A Haunting in Venice just like the title suggests is depressing and intense. I know there is no ghost in the film and there will be a logical connection to everything.

I prefer this change in aesthetic of the film as the new film is not trying to be extravagant or royal like the other films but this film definitely looks promising. The teaser also revealed the film’s release date-15th September 2023. Kenneth Branagh is acting and directing, Michael Green has written the script. There is a huge ensemble cast including Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, Michelle Yeoh, Kyle Allen, Camille Cottin, Jude Hill, Ali Khan, Emma Laird, Kelly Reilly, and Riccardo Scamarico.
