Actors Strike

For the later part of this year the industry is at a standstill because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. I think we all have an idea about the pitiful condition of writers throughout the world be it any industry. Hollywood is no different and treats these creative minds poorly. The Guild has shown an extremely bold stance against these money hungry institutions by refusing any work until the studios finally pay heed to the genuine demands of writers. And guess what miracles do happen as on September 25th, WGA agreed on a new deal with studios and the Writers’ strike came to an end. However, the Actors’ strike continued. Well, the studios couldn’t afford to keep the actors on strike for long as after months long of negotiations, it appears that the Actors’ strike has ended.

SAG-AFTRA Strike Ending Is Good News For Movie Fans!

The basic premise of Actors’ strike was to fight for better wages and protections against AI, among other issues. The negotiations of SAG-AFTRA with the studios began a while back but they weren’t fruitful. The recent meetings between the two parties were becoming increasingly tense as the studios refused to agree to the guild’s terms and even threatened to push talks to 2024. Fortunately, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed today that the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee has approved a tentative deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, bringing to an end the dual 2023 Hollywood strikes.

For the strike to end officially, the above mentioned deal must be ratified. Which is why the speculated date for the strike’s official end is Thursday, November 9th at 12:01 a.m. If this date sticks then the SAG-AFTRA strike will have lasted 117 days, just 31 days shorter than the writers’ strike, which significantly overlapped with the actors strike and ended this September. While it may not be official yet given the deal’s ratification but the actors can now resume their usual duties. This includes performing in productions on which they are contracted and promoting current or upcoming projects.

This development could significantly benefit the box office prospects of movies like The Marvels, Disney’s Wish and Trolls Band Together. (Note: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was already allowed to move forward with promotion in late October because of an interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA.) This means that many halted productions will now be resumed. Dune: Part Two, Snow White, and Deadpool 3, will find themselves reshuffled on the schedule yet again because of this delay in the middle.

The SAG AFTRA Strike began on 14th July midnight and is supposed to end on November 9th, 12:01 a.m.
