Among all the hype for Thor: Love & Thunder this news might’ve slipped under the rug. David O. Russell’s new film Amsterdam’s first trailer was released. For those of you not aware with Russell’s work, he has been on that directorial chair for a long time. He has helmed films like Silver Linings Playbook that got Jennifer Lawrence her Oscar, American Hustle, Joy, The Fighter that Christian Bale his Oscar in a supporting role. The director’s filmography is genuinely filled with some gems. In his new film i.e., Amsterdam he has a star studded cast. Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Rami Malek, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Rock, Michael Shannon, Zoey Saldana, Michael B. Jordan and Robert De Niro. The film is also rumored to have a cameo by Taylor Swift. The film is a historical drama set in the 1930s.
The premise of the film that has been made aware to us is, “Set in the ’30s, it follows three friends who witness a murder, become suspects themselves, and uncover one of the most outrageous plots in American history.” This is too vague. So does the trailer give us glimpses of what the film actually be about?
Amsterdam Trailer Shows Christian Bale and Chris Rock in a sticky spot?
The trailer opens with Chris Rock’s character saying the cold line, “You have a dead white man in a box. Not even a casket. It doesn’t even have a top on it.” As he takes the pine container out, he wails: “Who do you think is going to get in trouble here?” From there the trailer shows some era appropriate shots to give us the idea of the milieu. Then Christian Bale’s character says, “We formed a pact and we swore to protect each other… no matter what.”
Later the trio-Christian Bale’s, Margot Robbie’s and John David Washington’s characters finds themselves responsible for murder which according to Christian Bale is “Which is not true” as he confides it in front of Anya Taylor-Joy and Rami Malek. Although, they do look guilty according to the scene of crime. From this point the trailer moves towards the trio trying to find Robert De Niro’s character as he has seen something monstrous.
“This is becoming a lot larger than any of us, I had to stab a guy; I had to hit a lady with a brick one time.” Margot Robbie’s character notes as the trailer moves forward. To be honest for a first trailer this was actually a good one. It was able to evoke excitement in me regarding the film and the kind of ensemble the film has, you have to watch the film just to see all these greats share one screen. Given David O. Russell’s track record we can safely assume this movie is going to be worth our time.
The trailer also proves one of the rumors to be true. Taylor Swift does make an appearance in the Amsterdam trailer confirming her role in the film. However who does she play exactly is to be seen and we can expect more information of the film to drop as we near its release date. The one pet peeve I do share with the trailer is the notion of today’s trailers to show more than we need to know. We already the basic premise why show a plot point like the trio searching for De Niro?
Regardless, I’m excited for David O. Russell’s next venture. Are you? Watch Amsterdam’s trailer here:
