Set in El Paso, the book revolves around two self-questioning Mexican-American teenage boys. These two 15-year-olds encounter challenges and discover the importance of sexuality, race, and relationships. This inseparable duo realizes their connection is deeper than friendship. But, only Dante (Reese Gonzales) identifies as gay. Aristotle suffers from internalized homophobia and due to his fear of society, he ignores his feelings. The story is set in this simple premise and goes on to portray complex issues and personal struggles.

Taking a risk on her first feature, Alberto picked a story, where one guy gets gay-bashed and another gets so aggressive he almost beats someone to death. She insisted on keeping these elements in the film. At the core, the boys are not struggling with homophobia, their struggle is entirely internal. Skinny crop tops and Dante’s supportive mom will remind you of Call Me by Your Name starring Timothee Chalamet.
