Barbie is ruling the box office right now, the film might’ve slipped from #1 spot at the box office but the film is still generating strong numbers. However, for some inexplicable reason Warner Bros. announced that the film will be available to watch at home. Warner Bros. is moving forward with its aggresive theatre to digital strategy. Unlike it’s rival, Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer will not be headed to online platforms anytime soon, due to its 120-day exclusive theatrical release window. Barbie on the other hand will be available for a digital purchase online on Tuesday, September 5. After only 46 days of its theatrical run, the summer smash has given fans the opportunity to watch the summer blockbuster at home.
Coming to more confusing news. Barbie is getting a Digital and VOD release but also an IMAX release. As contradictory as it may sound it is true. Keep reading to find out the details.
The Barbie Craze Is Getting Out Of Hand!
IMAX only allows one film to run in their format and till the end of August it is going to be Oppenheimer. Seeing the overwhelming response to Barbie, the makers have decided to let the film have a limited IMAX run with some unseen post credit footage. According to Deadline, Barbie’s limited IMAX release will run for one week beginning on September 22nd. This will take place before Gareth Edwards’ science-fiction film – The Creator releases in IMAX theaters on September 29th. Read Gerwig’s statement about Barbie’s upcoming IMAX release below:

Barbie’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
