Michael Cera, the man who is synonymous to so many cult classics like Scott Pilgrim, Juno, Superbad, Arrested Development etc. smoothly took over all our hearts with his convincing portrayal of Allan in the Barbie movie. In the movie, Allan has no other variants, there is just only one Allan, and he is Ken’s friend and all of Ken’s clothes fit him. However, Cera’s casting happened almost miraculously and the role would have gone to someone else if he had not taken things into his own hands.
How Michael Cera Took What He Wanted – The Role of Allan In Barbie
Michael Cera, in an interview with GQ, revealed that his agent had almost passed on that role because the latter had assumed that Cera would not be interested in a movie like Barbie. However, Cera had quite the opposite reaction and immediately wanted his agent to call back the reps of the movie. Cera told GQ, “My manager got a call checking on my availability for it, and he called me and he said, ‘I got a call about this movie. It’s the “Barbie” movie. Greta Gerwig’s directing it, and it’s filming in London for four months of something, so I told them you probably wouldn’t want to to do it because you probably don’t want to go to London.”
“I was like, ‘What! Call them back!’ He didn’t like blow it or anything, but he’s like, ‘I managed their expectations that you might not want to do it.’ I was like, ‘How can I not do it? I need to do it!’”
Cera then decided to ensure that he got the role himself. “I somehow got Greta’s email address, I think through a common friend of ours, and I emailed her like, ‘Can I be in it? Can I do that part?’” Cera continued. “And she was like, ‘Let’s get on a Zoom right now. Here’s a Zoom link, I’ll be on there for the next hour.’ So she was just hanging out on the Zoom, like, ‘Click the link whenever you’re ready.’ And then we talked about it, and it just all happened really fast from there.”
Allan has become one of the most popular characters from the Barbie movie, especially after his display of heroism near the end of the movie that was thoroughly impressive. Barbie has grossed over a billion dollars at the international box office.
