Just yesterday Barbie grossed $1.381 billion at the worldwide box office, officially beating The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $1.365 billion. There seems to be no other movie that will beat Barbie this year. But then again, no one expected Barbie to be such a success. So, the future is a mystery. Barbie will also have a limited IMAX release will run for one week beginning on September 22nd. This will take place before Gareth Edwards’ science-fiction film – The Creator releases in IMAX theaters on September 29th. The limited run should further help the film’s cause. Warner Bros. had announced the digital release date for the film on September 5 but then delayed it by a week. However, now the studio has delayed the digital release indefinitely and is promoting the IMAX release by promising more footage with post-credit clips. Today, for the first time we have an update on Barbie’s Blu-ray release date.
Barbie’s Blu-ray Release Date Is Far Away!
According to Luiz Fernando, Barbie’s physical (DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD) release date is currently set for January 2, 2024. This will come as great news to many as this is the first time a date has been attached to the physical release of the film. However, just like the digital release date there is no guarantee that the Blu-ray release date won’t be changed in the coming weeks. There is still no update on Barbie’s streaming release date on Warner Bros’ Max.
Barbie has become the Top Gun: Maverick of 2023. While the Tom Cruise starrer earned $1.49 billion and Barbie is quite behind that figure but the IMAX release might help the film come closer to it. Even their physical media release date are following a similar trajectory. Top Gun: Maverick hit stores 158 days after soaring into theaters. Simlarly, Barbie is hitting shelves 165 days after opening in theaters (if the Jan. 2 date sticks).
This summer has Barbenheimer frenzy. Barbie and Oppenheimer released at a time when summer 2023 ticket sales were down 7% from the same time in 2022 after films like The Flash underperformed at the box office. Since the beginning of “Barbenheimer,” the summer gross drastically improved, with the tally now standing $4.028 billion, the most since the summer of 2019, which hit $4.34 billion thanks, in part, to The Lion King and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which each eclipsed the billion-dollar mark globally. Both the blockbusters have triggered a spike in ticket sales by 16.6% helping Hollywood to go back to pre-pandemic levels for the first time in 4 years.
The film’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
