Stereotypical Barbie, alongside a wide range of fellow Barbies all reside in Barbieland, a matriarchal utopia. While their Ken counterparts spend their days hanging out at the beach, they hold jobs such as doctors, lawyers, and politicians. During a dance party, Stereotypical Barbie suddenly becomes stricken with worries about her own mortality. The following day, she finds herself depressed and experiencing sudden physical changes related to menopause. She meets with Weird Barbie, a local outcast who divulges that all residents of Barbieland are toys. In order to recover from her mysterious affliction, she must travel into the real world and find her owner.
On the way to Los Angeles, Stereotypical Barbie is joined by a Ken who has an unrequited crush on her. Arriving at Venice Beach through a portal, they both cause multiple antics in the area, alarming the Mattel CEO, who orders their capture. Stereotypical Barbie tracks down her owner, a teenage girl named Sasha. She and Ken find Sasha at a nearby high school, who heavily mocks Barbie with her friends before learning that her mother Gloria, a Mattel employee, is the catalyst of her existential crisis. Gloria began playing with Sasha’s Barbie toys while experiencing a midlife crisis, inadvertently transferring her worries to Stereotypical Barbie. Stereotypical Barbie is almost caught by Mattel’s CEO and his subordinates, but Gloria and Sasha rescue her before travelling together to Barbieland.
Meanwhile, Ken discovers America’s patriarchal system and learns that “men rule the world”. Returning to Barbieland, he convinces the other Kens to rise up and establish their own patriarchy. The Barbies are demoralized and quickly subjugated into submissive roles as maids, housewives, and girlfriends, causing Stereotypical Barbie to be depressed. With help and encouragement from Sasha, Gloria, Weird Barbie, Allan, and other abandoned Barbie toy lines, the Barbies are motivated to strike back against the Kens and regain control over Barbieland, causing the Kens to go to war against each other on the Barbieland beach. After a truce, the Barbies quickly regain control of the establishment, causing Ken to break down. Both Stereotypical Barbie and Ken apologize to each other.
She understands her ineptness to his courting made him rebel but reminds him that, although she is not in love with him, he can still develop his own identity. Stereotypical Barbie, who faces another crisis over her future role, meets once again with Mattel’s CEO before being intervened by Ruth Handler, who explains the origins of Barbie to her, and explains that although she is a doll created from an idea by her daughter, her inspiration throughout women over the years encompasses that of her main origin. Emotionally moved by this, Stereotypical Barbie asks Ruth to turn her into a human and go back to the real world, later saying that she already is. Sometime later, Sasha, Gloria and her husband take Stereotypical Barbie, now going by Barbara Roberts, to a gynecologist for her first appointment.
