Barbie has become a global phenomenon. The film is earning double what its competition – Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, is earning. In just 13 days of its release, the Greta Gerwig blockbuster has collected $811 million, with $384.7 million coming from the domestic circuits. Barbie is soon going to breach the $1 billion mark, becoming the only second 2023 movie to achieve this feat after The Super Mario Bros. There is a real possibility that Barbie becomes the highest grossing film of 2023, beating out The Super Mario Bros. The film was only made in only $145 million so it is an all time blockbuster now. For the past two weeks, Barbie is #1 at the box office. The early week 3 projections still put the movie at the top despite the new release – Meg 2: The Trench.
So, will Warner Bros. ever release Barbie on streaming? As the movie is doing so well at the box office. Well, thankfully we have an official answer.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Reveals Barbie’s Streaming Release Window!
The Wrap reports that during Warner’s second-quarter earnings call, WBD CEO David Zaslav told shareholders that Warner Bros. is dedicated to give Greta Gerwig’s film a traditional theatrical window for the film, meaning Barbie would come to Max this fall. This news comes as many studios revisit their streaming strategies, lengthening the theatrical windows of movies in an attempt to better recoup costs. The official statement provided by The Wrap read:
“We really believe in the motion picture window. Let this movie go to the motion picture window, play it up, build up that brand, then have it go into PVOD. Take it through these windows of economics that have worked forever, and we think work extremely well. And then put it on Max. And when it goes on Max, we think it’ll have a very good impact and that’ll be in the fall.”
So, if you’re waiting to find the Barbie movie on Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform Max, then you’ll have to wait at least for another two months, as it will come to streaming in October, latest.
Barbie’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
