Disney recently updated its 2024 theatrical slate. While neither, Wish or The Marvels have yet to make this year’s debuts, Disney is already making headlines. As a result of Hollywood strikes, Disney revisited its 2024 slate, and though there are questions about delays, there’s also anticipation for its 2024 blockbuster movies. On October 27, Disney released its updated 2024 release schedule, including the eight biggest Disney movies expected to debut next year amidst the ongoing industry strike.
Deadpool 3 (May 3, 2024)
Though the franchise’s MCU debut has yet to confirm its official title, we already know that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is returning along with Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool for a Multiversal adventure featuring a long list of cameos and rumored possibilities, from Taylor Swift to Loki’s Mobius. As the movie was halfway through production before the strikes halted the movie’s work, it seems unlikely that Deadpool 3 will be released in May. However, according to the latest reports Disney hopes to resume film production in January 2024, so there is a possibility of a 2024 release.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (May 24, 2024)
2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes sequel Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes starring Owen Teague is “set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows.” On November 2, fans received a trailer for the film.
Inside Out 2 (June 14, 2024)
After nine years since its original 2015 film, Inside Out 2 will reunite with the original cast, with new emotions as a result of Riley’s teenage years. We don’t know if it will be affected by the Hollywood strikes. The plot of the movie reads: “Riley is a happy, hockey-loving 11-year-old Midwestern girl, but her world turns upside-down when she and her parents move to San Francisco. Riley’s emotions – led by Joy – try to guide her through this difficult, life-changing event. However, the stress of the move brings Sadness to the forefront. When Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley’s mind, the only emotions left in Headquarters are Anger, Fear, and Disgust.”
Mufasa: The Lion King (July 5, 2024)
The prequel to the 2019 box office hit, musical drama film Mufasa: The Lion King will tell a new tale about Mufasa’s path to becoming king and his bond with his brother, Scar. Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and John Kani reprise their roles from the remake and are joined by Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr., voicing their young versions of Mufasa and Scar, respectively.
Captain America: Brave New World (July 26, 2024)
Sam Wilson’s first big screen entry as Captain America and the film also stars Harrison Ford as Thunderbolt Ross. Though Disney listed this as a July release, there are assumptions that the film could be sooner, taking the May 3 slot of Deadpool 3. The film is directed by Julius Onah and stars Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson, Shira Haas, and Liv Tyler.
Untitled Alien Event Movie (August 16, 2024)
Directed by Fede Alvarez, the untitled 20th Century Studios film is expected to follow, “a group of young people in a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”
The Amateur (November 8, 2024)
Another 20th Century Studios movie, The Amateur starring Rami Malek and Rachel Brosnahan follows a CIA cryptographer who loses his wife because of a terrorist attack. He then blackmails the agency to train him to grab a hold of his wife’s killer himself.
Thunderbolts (December 20, 2024)
Marvel Studio’s final movie of 2024 is Thunderbolts, a long-awaited team of past Marvel Cinematic Universe villains and antiheroes, including Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, and more.
