The release of The Little Mermaid this year had been an event that had everybody talking. From critics to general audiences to everybody on social media who can form a coherent sentence, there was no one who did not have an opinion to share about the live-action adaptation of the beloved classic. The 2023 movie starred Halle Bailey, and her casting as Ariel had sent out ripples of controversy. An African-American mermaid who had vibrant red locs seemed unimaginable to many, and a sizable crowd had decided to boycott the movie too. However, the film did hold ground at the theaters and grossed a billion dollars worldwide. Bailey received widespread praise for her acting chops and her glorious voice, which she used to sing the multiple iconic songs from the movie.
Disney’s Re-release of The Little Mermaid
Disney will be re-releasing a sing-along version of The Little Mermaid, considering that the movie can be thought of as a musical. Recently a number of musical films are being rereleased as singalong versions, like Mamma Mia, for example. The movie features songs from the legendary Alan Menken and a few new additions from Lin Manuel Miranda, who last collaborated with Disney on Encanto. The film is going to feature songs like “Kiss The Girl”, “Scuttlebutt”, “Under the Sea” etc.
If you are a fan of The Little Mermaid, love singalongs, and want to re-experience the magic of the mermaid at the theaters again, you should definitely visit the theaters to watch this version. Halle Bailey is one of the sole reasons you should watch this film, Jonah Hauer-King is also extremely personable and attractive in the movie, which many fans have pointed out as of late.
