Last year at Disney’s D23 Expo, the studio closed day 1’s show by announcing a new original film – Wish, that will come out in late 2023. The film was meant to celebrate the 100 years of Disney’s storytelling with original characters and songs. Wish is about how the wishing star came to be. The film is be set in a fantasy world that outdates every Disney world as it will be the world of wishes. There is another thing that is special about this picture, unlike most of the recent Disney releases, the film is not 3D animation. It is a 2D animation featurette, first since 2011’s Winnie the Pooh. Wish is not entirely 2D, it’s a blend of 2D and 3D animation. So, did this shift in approach by the studio work in its favor? Did the film turn out to be amazing? Let’s see what the critics have to say.
Disney’s Wish First Reactions Couldn’t Be More Positive!
These first reactions surfaced online a while back. They’re not on an official review aggregator site as Rotten Tomatoes. These are tweets pulled up from X (formerly knows as Twitter). You can check out them out on the social media outlet.
Caideen Reed (Ghostface-Doo) – “#Wish is indeed a celebration of Disney’s 100 years! Asha and the gang are a bright and amazing addition to the roster of Disney characters. Arianna, and Chris have excellent performances. Love Star and Valentino. The Animation is so beautiful.”
Courtney Howard – “#Wish/ #WishMovie is ENCHANTING & DAZZLING. A magical, inspiring fairy tale & heroine for a new generation. I was swept away by the animation & musical splendor that blends classical & modern techniques brilliantly. Ariana DeBose & Chris Pine shine bright. “
Drew Taylor – “Combining next gen technology with timeless storytelling, #Wish looks like nothing you’ve seen before and feels exactly like your favorite Disney animated feature — whatever it is. A celebration of hope, community and self actualization and 100 years of Disney magic. Loved it⭐️”
POC Culture – “#Disney is back to form with
@DisneyWishMovie!
Featuring a super catchy soundtrack by Julia Michaels, #Wish is both a homage to Disney animation history and an inspired breakthrough tale about the power of courage and community.”
Jamie Jirak – “#Wish is pure heart. You can really feel the care that went into celebrating Disney’s 100th. The songs are great, which is always my main concern. Ariana DeBose sounds amazing, Chris Pine oozes villainous charm, and Alan Tudyk is hilarious. But Star is the star!”
Tessa Smith (Mama’s Geeky) – “Disney’s Wish is PURE MAGIC! The PERFECT way to celebrate 100 yrs! Asha is loveable, Magnifico is the villain you’ll LOVE to HATE, Star & Valentino are adorable sidekicks, while Asha’s friends bring the comedy! A wonderful story of hope with catchy music & many Easter eggs!”
The film features the voices of Ariana DeBose as Asha, Chris Pine as Magnifico, and Alan Tudykas as Asha’s favorite goat Valentino. The film is co-directed by Oscar-winning director Chris Buck who you must know from the Frozen films and Fawn Veerasunthorn credited for Raya and the Last Dragon.
Disney’s Wish will release in theatres worldwide on November 24th, 2023.
