One of the most anticipated films of the past year Dune, took the cinema world by storm with its insane storytelling, VFX, and score. The film was one of the top contenders for Oscars 2022 and it will walked home with 6 of them, all in technical categories. With positive reviews and ratings from fans and critics alike, everyone is waiting for what’s next in store for Villeneuve’s fantasy epic. Here’s all you need to know about the future of one of the most incredible sci-fi fantasies of our time.
Dune 2 Filming Begins and Potential Release Date
Good news is that the filming has now officially begun though we already reported that a few days ago. “We’re rolling. Production on Dune: Part Two has begun,” the Twitter account shared.

Dune was originally supposed to release in December 2020, but due to the ongoing pandemic it was pushed back to October 2021. Likewise, Dune 2 was supposed to release sometime in 2022 but was pushed further to 20th October, 2023. But given the pandemic situation no date was reliable and hence, Dune 2 was once agin delayed, this time to 17th November 2023.
Now to meet this deadline shooting needs to begin and wrap as soon as possible this year, because the post-production for this film would take a lot of time. The production design and practical effects involved, make such projects much more difficult than say CGI heavy superhero films. The aesthetics and the larger than life yet realistic approach in Dune is what we liked about it. And creating that requires time, so its is possible that the film doesn’t even make it till November 2023.
Returning Cast and Characters
First of all, the leads Timothee Chalamet’s Paul, Zendaya’s Chani, Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica will make a definitive return in Dune 2. Returning to their roles also are Stellan Skarsgard (Vladimir Harkonnen), Dave Bautista (Glossu Rabban), and Javier Bardem (Stilgar). Charlotte Rampling’s Galus Helen Mohiam will also return to spread her holy war.
Also, Josh Brolin’s Gurney Halleck will most likely return in Dune 2 as well. Those who have read Dune or have seen David Lynch’s Dune are aware that Halleck survived the Battle for Arrakis. So, we can expect him to return unless Villeneuve decides to make changes of his own. Apart from this, some minor surviving characters will also make a return along with many new ones.
Florence Pugh is also all set to make her debut as Princess Irulari and her first look was leaked just yeasterday. We will also finally see Emperor Shaddam IV of House Corrino, who was missing from Dune (2021) in the next one. From the technical point of view, Greig Fraser (The Mandalorian, Vice, Lion) will most probably be back as the cinematographer. And Hans Zimmer, the legend himself, will surely return to compose for what he considers “his dream project”.
