Everything You Need to Know About the IT Prequel, Welcome to Derry

If Pennywise ever gave you trust issues with clowns, get ready — he’s back. Sort of. HBO’s IT: Welcome to Derry takes us back before the Losers’ Club, before the red balloons, and before Bill Skarsgård’s unsettling smile haunted your dreams. This time, we’re going deep into how Derry became the creepiest town in horror history.

IT: Welcome to Derry – A Trip Back in Time

The story is set in 1962, which is about 27 years before the events of IT Chapter One. Yup, that’s right — the curse kicks in earlier. Later episodes might even travel further back, to the early 1900s, when Pennywise was probably figuring out his whole “terrify small children” brand strategy.

The show plans to uncover what made Derry such a messed-up town in the first place. If you’ve read Stephen King’s novel, you know there were small historical snippets — old tragedies, missing kids, mysterious fires. This prequel is finally giving those stories a full spotlight. Think of it as horror archaeology.

Why a Prequel?

Simple: there’s way too much about IT we still don’t know. Why does Pennywise come back every 27 years? Why do Derry’s citizens act like they’re allergic to noticing evil? And seriously, what even is Pennywise? A demon? A space creature? A shape-shifting cosmic nightmare in a circus costume?

The series aims to dig into all that. Director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti, the duo behind the IT movies, are returning to lead the project. They’ve said this show will “fill in the blanks” of Pennywise’s origins — though, fair warning, they joked it might also “ruin the mystery.” We’ll take that risk.

Who’s Starring (and Scaring) in It: Welcome to Derry

The big question: is Bill Skarsgård back? Yes! Our favorite dancing clown returns, makeup and all. Joining him are Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, and Chris Chalk, among others. The lineup feels like a solid mix of fresh faces and familiar frights.

Behind the scenes, the Muschietti siblings team up with Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane as co-showrunners. That means the tone will probably balance eerie mystery with emotional storytelling — and, of course, a few moments that make you regret turning off the lights.

What to Expect

The prequel will likely explore iconic moments from Derry’s haunted history, like the Black Spot fire — a tragedy hinted at in King’s novel. We’ll also see how the town’s fear keeps feeding Pennywise’s power. Less jump scares, more psychological chills. Expect slow dread, weird legends, and maybe a few clues tying into Stephen King’s larger universe.

Welcome to Derry isn’t just another cash-grab prequel. It’s a peek under the circus tent — the origin story of evil itself. If you’ve ever wondered why Pennywise keeps coming back, or how Derry became cursed, this series is your invitation into the nightmare.

So yeah… grab some popcorn. Maybe keep a light on. Because in Derry, every 27 years, the clown isn’t the only thing that comes back — your fear does too.
