Frozen 3

I think we’re all familiar with Frozen, it was the breakout animated film in the Disney line-up. The film had no IP but it was able to freeze the audiences in the theatres which resulted in the first film crossing $1 Billion. The second installment in the franchise, already had the support of the immense success of the first film and the IP that it had gathered. Naturally the sequel was a bigger financial success, however, to its credit, the sequel didn’t drop in quality in fact many people claim it is better than the original. The sequel came out six years after the first one, Disney should really do something about the time between its sequels. Regardless, the franchise continued in the form of the short featurettes released in 2017 called Frozen Fever and Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.

When finally Frozen II came out, it seemed like a very good stopping point for the franchise, it felt like another duology that Disney had planned but as we know the duologies never make it, another film is added to them to make it whole and to be called a trilogy. Well, it looks like Disney has just done that with the Frozen franchise.

Frozen 3 Officially Moving At Disney!

At the Q1 Financial Financial Results conference call, Disney CEO Bob Iger officially confirmed that Frozen is in the works at House of the Mouse. In 2019, Frozen director Jennifer Lee was not sure whether a third installment in the franchise is necessarily a good thing as she felt done after the second one. However, she did keep the door open if there was more story to tell. She’d said, “I know this sounds crazy, but I’m still hoping we did right by ‘Frozen 2’. I’m still in that overwhelming position of, our kids just went out to the world. Everything feels final, but also bittersweet. Time will tell if we have more story to tell, or if anyone even wants it. So, there you have it. [laughs] Right now, I feel very done.”

Frozen 3 is not the only sequel that Disney announced at this meeting. Zootopia and Toy Story are also getting sequels. The reason all these films are getting sequels is because these are Disney’s prime works in the animation department and they’re almost guaranteed box office success. If you have noticed, Universal Studios or Dreamworks is kicking Disney’s or Pixar’s ass at the box office. All the animated films that have released in that last three years, only three have crossed $150 Million domestically and all of them are Dreamworks’.

All the three films including the latest Puss in Boots: The Last Wish have greater global box office numbers as well. Pixar was once the champion of the box office and Dreamworks struggled against it but it seems like the tide has changed. Disney wants to reverse this and hence, I’m guessing all these famous franchises are getting sequels to put Disney back to #1 when it comes to animation films.
