Ridley Scott is back in the director’s chair with his Gladiator. The first Gladiator film to come out since the original in the franchise. Deadline reports that the sequel has scored a release date of late November 2024. The first time I heard it I was confused and concerned. The last time we’d discussed the sequel’s release date, it was clear that you cannot take the late 2024 slot as that is when James Cameron’s box office juggernaut Avatar threequel will come out. I’d predicted that this would make the studio and Scott go for a later release date possibly early 2025. However, now that Avatar 3 is postponed there seems to be no problem. Now, to keep up with the November 2024 release date the film needs to start shooting immediately and it has. But we could still see some delay as well considering how much care and effort Scott puts in to make his movies iconic. Today we have a proof of Scott’s passion as the set photos give us an idea of Gladiator 2‘s massive scale.
Gladiator 2’s Scale Is Huge!
Gladiator 2 began filming in May 2023 at Malta. As the the principal photography of the sequel is on its way, the construction of the sets has certainly started. The size of the sets indicate the scale at which the Gladiator 2 is mounted. The fact that the studio decided to construct a life-sized Colosseum (rather than creating a CGI backdrop) for its most important scenes also suggests that the studio is confident about the project. There is a while before we Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington or Pedro Pascal in their costumes on set.
