God of War Ragnarok Valhalla Plot Details, Gameplay, All We Know

Now that the short lived Norse saga has been concluded with God of War: Ragnarok, fans have been left asking what is next for the manliest God who ever walked Greece and Midgard. Ragnarok is certainly one of the best games of 2022 and the combined narrative of God of War 2018 and Ragnarok is undoubtedly one of the best stories ever told in all kinds of media. So, while we wait for the next potential half sequel/DLC or a whole new game, we’ve been given a gift which we never saw coming!

All You Need to Know About God of War: Ragnarok – Valhalla

The Game Awards 2023 just took place a few hours ago and some of the announcements made there completely blew fans minds away. The biggest one being God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC which came out of nowhere! I mean seriously, if you claim to have seen this coming you are lying as there was absolutely no leaks, rumors, or anything about this expansion. We all surely expected an Atreus centred Half-Sequel or DLC but none of us expected more of Kratos so soon! The biggest update was not the DLC itself but how it is coming out just next week on December 12, 2023! Sony sure managed to keep this under wraps quite well.

Now everyone’s asking what it is all about, and we have a lot of answers for you. So first of all, hear me and rejoice as this DLC will be absolutely free for the gamers for who own God of War Ragnarok on either of the consoles PS4 or PS5. So, yes PS4 gamers can also have one last bang with Kratos. Next, the Valhalla DLC can be played at any time during the game however, it is recommended that you play it after the main story. This is because it serves as an epilogue to God of War: Ragnarok. Here’s what PS Blog said about its narrative.

“God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla will be an epilogue to the events of God of War Ragnarok that follows Kratos on a deeply personal and reflective journey. Set after the decisive battle against Odin and Atreus’ departure, Kratos has seen a path for himself that he never thought possible before. Brought to the mysterious shores of Valhalla accompanied only by Mimir, Kratos will enter its unknown depths to overcome trials within himself and face echoes of his past.”

As for the combat, it take main elements from God of War Ragnarok combat and blends it with fresh, experimental elements inspired by the roguelite genre. So, basically you have to finish the quest in one go and if you lose or die in between, you’ll have to restart from the beginning. This is basically like Niflheim Mist Echoes Maze from God of War 2018 but longer and more ruthless. “Accumulating rewards and knowledge during your attempts will help you get ever closer to discovering the mysteries that await Kratos within.”

In Valhalla, you’ll be facing a bunch of enemies you already know from the game and few new enemies as well. One such enemy spotted in the trailer was Cyclopes, an enemy from Greek Era. How exactly did a Greek creature end up in Valhalla is a mystery for now but we also heard the God of War 2005 music in the trailer. So, it is possible we might see more elements from the Greek era possibly tying up the two pantheons for the sequels. Moving on to armor and equipment, “Kratos must cast off his armor and equipment, and instead build towards both per-attempt and permanent rewards.” Apparently, you can keep the rewards you collect within Valhalla as well as the main game!

As for the future of God of War, it is possible that as you explore Valhalla in the DLC, you receive hints about the future of the franchise. With this DLC, it seems highly likely that in the next game, we see Kratos return to Greek Pantheon and start building it from scratch, hence fulfilling the prophecy at the end of Ragnarok. In Greek era, he fought to destroy, in Norse Era he fought to protect, and in future games it would be great to see him fight to build something. Also, we still expect an Atreus and Tyr centred half-sequel or DLC in the near future. You can read all about that here.
