Gran Turismo

Sony has officially announced the Gran Turismo film with the first details, and it appears that the movie will be racing into theatres sooner than we anticipated. Sony recently started an initiative to make movies and TV series based on its most popular PlayStation franchises. Uncharted was the first project under this approach released earlier this year, while The Last of Us is being adapted into a TV drama by HBO. The company is also working on TV adaptions of God of War (with Amazon) and Horizon (with Netflix).

Gran Turismo: Everything We Know About The Video Game-Based Film

The film, titled Gran Turismo, currently has a release date of August 11, 2023, reports Deadline. It was recently confirmed that Elysium and District 9 director Neill Blomkamp would helm the movie, which Sony’s Columbia Pictures studio will produce. Jason Hall, whose works include American Sniper and Thank You for Your Service, has written the screenplay for the film.

Sony’s brief plot description tells us that the movie is going to be about a teenage Gran Turismo player who wins a series of Nissan competitions using his gaming skills, eventually becoming an actual professional race car driver, based on a fascinating true story. This suggests the film could be based on the GT Academy contest, which was run by Nissan and Sony between 2008 and 2016 and gave winners a place in Nissan’s Driver Development Programme.

One of the most noteworthy real-life success stories of the GT Academy is British racer Jann Mardenborough, who won in 2011 and has subsequently competed in the GP3 Series, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Japanese Super GT series. With a 2023 release date, fans can expect to hear more details on the film as it moves further in production. Sony has yet to reveal who will star in the movie, but they’ll probably be looking for an all-star cast to lead it.
