GRRM Shares His Plans for More Dunk and Egg Stories, While Struggling With Winds of Winter

George R.R. Martin has spent years working on The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, and fans are still waiting. The novel has been in progress since the early 2010s and remains unpublished as of early 2026. Martin has openly admitted that the complex structure, with many point of view characters and interweaving plots, has made the writing extremely difficult. Critics and fans alike describe the wait as a true test of patience. In recent interviews, Martin confirmed he has been focusing on Winds of Winter as his next priority, even as he promotes other projects in his fantasy universe. He has said the book is like “a dozen novels in one” with different casts, which explains both the delay and the thorny path to finishing it. He also remains unsure about his long-term plans beyond this next book, saying it will determine what he writes afterward. Choices include A Dream of Spring (the planned final novel of the series), a second volume of his Targaryen history Fire and Blood, or more tales of Dunk and Egg!

Dunk and Egg Stories Are Back On Martin’s Radar

While Winds of Winter drags on, fans of another part of Martin’s world have something tasty to chew on. The author teased plans for more Tales of Dunk and Egg, the novellas that follow Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and his clever young squire Egg. These stories are lighter, smaller in scale, and focus on wandering adventure rather than kings and dragons.

In a recent interview, Martin said he would love to write more of these tales once he finds time to do so. He described that there are many stories to tell about Dunk and Egg’s education and future years, but squeezed into his busy schedule Martin still needs to prioritize Winds of Winter first.

Even more exciting for TV fans, showrunner Ira Parker has revealed that Martin shared 10 to 12 new outlines for Dunk and Egg novellas with the creative team behind HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. These outlines could take the characters through later parts of their lives and offer plenty of material if the TV series continues beyond its first season.

Right now, there are just three published Dunk and Egg novellas: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. The first season of the HBO adaptation covers The Hedge Knight, while season two is expected to adapt The Sworn Sword. If a season three happens, it may adapt ‘The Mystery Knight,’ but beyond that, there is no prewritten material to draw from, unless Martin writes more.

Here’s the practical bottom line: Winds of Winter is still unfinished, and Martin continues to work on it even as other exciting elements of the world come to screens and blog posts. Dunk and Egg may get more books down the road, maybe a handful or more, and HBO could adapt those if the show extends long enough.

So if you are a fan of political intrigue, dragons, and long waits… welcome to the club. The story is still unfolding, and Martin is balancing ambitions across his vast fantasy world.
