Grab your wands and maybe a tissue, because HBO just dropped the ultimate teaser for our return to Hogwarts. The documentary “Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic” premiered on April 5, 2026, and it is the deep dive we actually needed. Forget the rumors, we now have confirmed looks at the sets, the tech, and the tiny humans carrying the weight of our childhoods on their shoulders.
Meet Your New Golden Trio

The documentary finally puts faces to the names we have been tracking. Dominic McLaughlin is our new Harry Potter, and he looks every bit the “boy who lived” in the behind the scenes footage. Joining him are Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The special reveals the grueling UK wide casting process where over 30,000 kids auditioned. Seeing the chemistry between these three during screen tests is basically like watching the 2001 casting tapes all over again, but with better hair.
The Faculty Lounge is Stacked

If you thought the kids were the only draw, the adult cast list is an absolute flex. John Lithgow takes over the mantle of Albus Dumbledore, and the documentary shows him getting visibly emotional on set. He mentions that reimagining this canon allows the show to “let it breathe” and explore things happening in the wings that the movies skipped.ย We also got our first real look at:
- Janet McTeer as a very sharp Minerva McGonagall.
- Paapa Essiedu stepping into the heavy robes of Severus Snape.
- Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, which is honestly the casting choice of the century.
New Tech, Old Haunts

The show is filming at Leavesden Studios, the same place the original films came to life. However, the “Finding Harry” special highlights how they are using brand new technology to make the magic feel grounded. The production designers built massive, physical models of Hogwarts to ensure the “world building” goes deeper than anything we have seen before. The Great Hall and Diagon Alley look familiar but updated, with a level of detail that makes the original films look like a school play.
Mark Your Calendars
The documentary confirms that the first season, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” consists of eight episodes. It officially premieres on December 25, 2026, on HBO and Max. Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on “Succession,” leads the writing team, so expect some top tier drama. While the second season is currently in the script stage, HBO plans to keep the gaps between seasons as short as possible.
We are officially months away from the premiere, and this documentary proves the magic is in very capable hands. Stay tuned for more leaks, because the hype train has officially left Platform 9 3/4.
