Haunted Mansion is a remake of the 2003 film of the same name that starred Eddie Murphy. Similar to the previous attempt, this movie too had a mediocre critical reception but unlike the 2003 film, the remake turned out to be a huge box office bomb. The original Haunted Mansion’s reported budget was $90 million and it grossed $182 million worldwide. Based on the limited information available, the Eddie Murphy starrer at the least broke even if not generated a small profit. The remake was made on a massive budget of $157 million, thanks to its elaborate cast and only minted a global cume of $105 million ($65 million domestic). It was Disney’s lowest box office opening of the year. Disney has a huge box office misfire on their hands and the studio should find some way of making up their losses. One of the them is by making the film’s physical media available for purchase to the audience.
After Box Office Failure, Haunted Mansion To Arrive on VOD!
The film was based on Disney’s famous theme park ride. In a world where there are countless spectacular books waiting to be adapted, investing so heavily on a theme park ride movie is arguably not a good idea. Also, the release date of the film was a huge contributor to the film’s failure, as Barbenheimer left no audience for the Disney movie. If the film was released in the Halloween season then maybe Haunted Mansion would’ve found a larger audience.
To correct this blunder, Disney is now making the film’s physical media of the film available on October 17th, much closer to Halloween. Haunted Mansion is also set to hit Digital HD on October 4th and will be available in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD a few weeks later.
