The Sanderson Sisters are back, and how! The first Hocus Pocus 2 teaser trailer dropped a few hours ago, and mind you, they still have the same appetite for children. The sequel to the iconic Halloween film, which takes place 29 years after the first one, reunites Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as Winifred, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson, respectively.
The teaser opens with three high school kids, played by Whitney Peak, Belissa Escobedo, and Lilia Buckingham, talking about their plans for Halloween night. Check it out for yourself below.
The Witches Return For Halloween After Almost 30 Years
“Birthday ritual: scary movie marathon, same as every year,” Becca (Peak) tells Cassie (Buckingham) as Becca and Izzy (Escobedo) visit a magic shop and recite a ritualistic prayer — before realising the chanting worked and lit the Black Flame Candle. The girls try to flee, but as they do, a red crack appears in the ground beneath them. “Lock up your children,” warns Winifred (Midler). “Yes, Salem. We’re back!”
The teaser then shows townsfolk greeting the witches dressed as the Sanderson Sisters, as a nod to the scenes in the original movie where everyone mistakenly believed the witches to be ladies simply dressing up as the witches. When asked if they are looking for the stage, Midler responds, “Always,” hinting that there will be another musical number similar to “I Put a Spell on You” from the first film.
The movie’s official synopsis states, “It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high-school students to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve.”
The film also stars Sam Richardson, Doug Jones, Hannah Waddingham, Froyan Gutierrez and Tony Hale, among others. The sequel to Hocus Pocus is produced by Adam Shankman and directed by Anne Fletcher. In January, Shankman had announced on Instagram that filming had wrapped, stating, “Coming to you #halloween #2022 on @disneyplus.”
Hocus Pocus 2: Some Legends Never Die
On the poster for the sequel, it reads, “We’re back, witches.” It seemed as though no time had passed for the returning cast while filming the sequel, a production source told PEOPLE in February. The source added that the three stars “all feel like it’s about time it happened and they wish they had done it sooner. The chemistry between the cast was still there.”
“Hocus Pocus fans will not be disappointed,” the insider said. “All of their favourite characters from the first movie return and then some.” Hocus Pocus 2 will be available for streaming on September 30 on Disney+.
