I’ve mentioned this before and I’ll say it again, James Wan is one of the most inspiring horror filmmakers of this generation. He has given us three spectacular scary franchises- The Conjuring, Saw and Insidious. What is more interesting is that all three franchises had solid starts but as Wan gave the franchise some space, the quality declined drastically. Speaking of Insidious, the film was regarded as one of best horror films but its sequels sadly just became cash grabs as the studio was banking on the first film’s success and popularity. The fifth film in the franchise, Insidious: The Red Door was set to be the final chapter of the horror saga. So, is the final chapter a worthy conclusion to the famous Insidious franchise? Let’s find out.
Insidious: The Red Door Reviews Round-Up – A Spectacular Failure?
Paula Vázquez Prieto {La Nación (Argentina)} – “Patrick Wilson’s directorial debut demonstrates an interest in form, in the plasticity of colorful and gothic dreams, that diverges from the duller aesthetic of contemporary franchises.” Original Score: 3/5
Pablo O. Scholz (Clarín) – “The story isn’t compelling, the effects aren’t scary, and the performances aren’t credible.” Original Score: 2/4
Graeme Tuckett (Stuff.co.nz) – “Mostly plays as though someone read the outlines for three or four average horror movies and then watched a couple of episodes of Stranger Things with a bottle of gin and a mild concussion.” Original Score: 1.5/5
Jim Schembri (jimschembri.com) – “Enough already.” Original Score: 2/5
Anthony O’Connor {FILMINK (Australia)} – “… knocking on this door should provide an adequate, if not spectacular, final trip into the Further.” Original Score: 12/20
Juanma Fernández París {El Nuevo Día (Puerto Rico)} – “Despite being the equivalent of a walk through a county fair horror house, this is the Insidious installment with the best executed and sustained suspense.”
Diego Batlle (Otroscines.com) – “All the rather meticulous work on the conflictive father-son relationship gives way in its second half to a cascade of ornate nightmares and diabolical apparitions that do not add much…” Original Score: 2.5/5
Casey Chong (Fiction Horizon) – “The long-awaited direct sequel to Insidious: Chapter 2 is a tepid supernatural-horror disappointment.” Original Score: 5/10
Peter Gray (The AU Review) – “Open the door, don’t open the door…we fail to care and wish the other dimensional demon would put us all out of our misery.” Original Score: 1.5/5
