Kareena Kapoor Khan has all eyes on her once again, and this time, it is for her much-awaited streaming debut. Netflix announced the launch of one of its biggest Indian films this year, Jaane Jaan — a mystery thriller directed by Sujoy Ghosh (of Kahaani and Te3n fame), to much excitement and curiosity from fans and viewers alike.

What is Jaane Jaan About?

Jaane Jaan is a Hindi film adaptation of the Japanese novel, The Devotion of Suspect X, by Keigo Higashino. Khan is supposed to play a divorced, single mother who must attempt to cover up the  murder of her abusive ex-husband who shows up at her doorstep to extort money from her and threatening and harming her daughter. She attempts to do all this  accompanied by her neighbor, in the midst of an ongoing police investigation. In the 30 second teaser released by Netflix, the actress can be seen singing the 1972  R.D. Burman number, Jaane Jaan Dhoondta Phir Raha, with neon lights across her face. The clip does not elucidate anything about the plot of the film, just hints at its overall general direction in terms of atmosphere and energy. The film also stars Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma in pivotal roles.

Ghosh, who is fresh off directing Netflix’s Lust Stories 2 and Typewriter, said about directing this feature, “Jaane Jaan is based on the book which has been the love of my life for a long, long time. From the day I read Devotion of  Suspect X, I wanted to adapt it into a film. It was the most amazing love story I had ever read and today thanks to Kareena,  Jaideep, and Vijay that story is alive on screen. We all worked very hard to tell this story and hopefully the audience will love it as  much as we  do.”

Kareena has also said about the film and her experience working on it to PTI, “I try to do different things at every curve. When Sujoy offered me the film and told me the cast, I jumped at it. Working with   Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma has really transformed me. It made me believe in different things because they are actors from a different realm. It has added a lot of freshness to me and my character.”

Jaane Jaan releases on Netflix on September 21, coinciding with the actress’ birthday.
