I think we’re all aware what is going on with Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp currently. The actor won the defamation trail against his ex-wife Amber Heard. Since the allegations were laid upon Depp by Heard, Depp had lost various endorsements, films, money but most importantly he lost a lot of respect amongst his peers, friends and fans. He was being called the wife-beater. However, since the trial victory we haven’t really seen him returning to his rightful place in Hollywood. We were expecting list of movies that would line up after the victory. Well we haven’t seen that yet but there were certainly some rumors that talked about Disney offering Depp $300 Million to return as Captain Jack Sparrow. There is no way to confirm or deny that this report. However, today we have news about a film that Depp is certainly connected but not as an actor but a director: Modigliani.
Johnny Depp’s Modigliani: Al Pacino to be part of the Cast?
According to The Hollywood Reporter the Donnie Brasco star: Johnny Depp will direct the film and his co-star: Al Pacino will act in the scene. The film is based on the life of this Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani. The official synopsis of the film reads- Modigliani: “The Italian-born painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani, considered a commercial failure, navigates a turbulent and eventful 48 hours that will become a turning point in his life, solidifying his reputation as an artistic legend.”
After the news of the film surfaced Depp went on air and expressed his excitement and gratitude for the film, “The saga of Mr. Modigliani’s life is one that I’m incredibly honored, and truly humbled, to bring to the screen,” said Depp. “It was a life of great hardship, but eventual triumph — a universally human story all viewers can identify with.”
The film is produced by Barry Navidi who has previously worked with Depp in the unfinished film Divine Raptures. When asked about the film, he revealed Al Pacino’s obsession with this story. “This project has been very close to Al’s heart. Al introduced me to the play Modigliani many years ago and I instantly fell in love with it,” Navidi said in a statement. “This is a slice of Modi’s life and not a bio. It’s been a dream of mine to work with Johnny again — he’s a true artist with an amazing vision to bring this great story to the screen.”
Depp hasn’t directed a film in 25 years. He did direct a few short music videos but nothing substantial. His last film as a director was The Brave (1997) that starred Depp along with Marlon Brando. It is unclear as of now whether Depp will direct as well as play the character or simply direct. The production of the film is supposed to start in Europe in 2023. The film’s story will be based on the play by Dennis McIntyre and adapted for the screen by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski.
Johnny Depp’s next film Jeanne du Barry helmed by French director Maïwenn will see him playing King Louis XV. The film doesn’t have release date yet.
