Joaquin Phoenix, one of the greatest actors of the 21st century played the role of the Clown Prince of Crime in Joker (2019). This role earned him his long awaited Oscar. Though the film impressed many for me it was more of a Arthur Fleck movie rather than Joker. The was hugely successful as it grossed over 1 billion dollars worldwide over a budget of only 60 million. Naturally, a sequel was being planned but nothing no concrete decision was made as no one was sure that Joaquin would return for a sequel. Last week, Todd Philips shared a picture of the Joker 2 title, Joker: Folie à Deux confirming the sequel. Along with it, he also shared a picture of Joaquin reading the script.
Joker 2 – Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn
Since this announcement fans are really excited about the sequel although Joaquin is yet to sign the film officially and he is not one to do sequels. Following the announcement, today we get the news that the musical sensation Lady Gaga may star in the film and she’ll be playing none other than Harley Quinn. To be frank the House of Gucci star is in very early talks to play the part but nevertheless the possibility is there. One might question this decision and rightly so there are more capable actresses than Lady Gaga, though to be fair she was great in House of Gucci and A Star is Born.
Todd Philips choice for Lady Gaga maybe because of the fact that the sequel is supposedly a musical. Yes, this is what we’ve heard and for Lady Gaga starring in a musical doesn’t seem so odd, right? As far as I’m concerned I’m really excited over the fact that the sequel will feature Harley Quinn regardless of who plays it. Why? We’ve seen and loved Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad but this iteration will be different as this is a separate universe from Snyder Verse or Matt Reeves’ Batman. Will Harley Quinn be more like Joaquin’s Joker or more extravagant? Only time shall tell.
I hope the sequel will focus primarily on the Joker rather than the Arthur Fleck as that was something I found missing in the first film. Same reason why I find Heath Ledger’s Joker the best yet, maybe in this film Joaquin can challenge that. There is no official news about the plot though, from the title Folie à Deux, one can presume it’ll deal with an identical or similar mental disorder affecting two or more individuals, usually the members of a close family. This is where I think Harley Quinn will come in as she’ll share a similar destiny to the Joker that’ll make them fall for each other in a beautiful and eerie musical.
Joker: Folie à Deux doesn’t have a release date yet.
