Hercule Poirot

Kenneth Branagh stars in Twentieth Century Fox’s “Murder on the Orient Express.”

Kenneth Branagh has made quite name for himself for directing films along with acting in them. He directed the Norse mythology epic Thor for Marvel that received mixed reactions. Along with some other films, he also directed Belfast for which he won an Academy award for Best Original Screenplay. Along with these films, if you have recognize Branagh it would mostly through his most famous role of Hercule Poirot. Hercule Poirot was the lead detective in Agatha Christie’s detective novels. He has become quite a famous pop culture icon due to his grey cells theory, eccentric character traits and the most gorgeous moustache ever. Kenneth Branagh was keen to bring the character on screen. There were previous attempts to do it but that was a long time ago.

Branagh started with the most famous Agatha Christie novel – Murder on the Orient Express. The formula was fixed. He’ll act and direct, it’ll have a huge ensemble cast with all the big names from Hollywood and always the most famous person from the cast would die. This was a brilliant technique through which the speculation ended as we guess the most famous person will have the most important role thus being the killer. Orient Express killed Johnny Depp. The film had a lukewarm response from audiences but it performed well at the box office. On a budget of $55 Million, the film made $352 Million. Naturally there was a sequel on another famous Christie novel – Death on the Nile. Once again, the formula was the same. The victim on the Nile was Gal Gadot. The cast of the sequel was more prolific than the first.

The budget of the sequel was amped up to $90 Million as unlike the first film which was set in a train, it covered the exuberant spots in Egypt. The film didn’t do well at the box office though, as it simply grossed $137 Million. Despite this there is an addition to the Hercule Poirot Franchise with a third movie being announced.

Which Agatha Christie Novel will the Third Hercule Poirot Movie Adapt?

The new movie was announced yesterday. The film be based on Christie’s A Haunting in Venice. The formula remains the same though. Branagh is acting and directing, Michael Green to write the script. There is a huge ensemble cast including Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, Michelle Yeoh, Kyle Allen, Camille Cottin, Jude Hill, Ali Khan, Emma Laird, Kelly Reilly, and Riccardo Scamarico. The film just like the previous one will be set in a new country- Venice where we’ll mouth watering visuals of Venice’s beauty in the Golden Age.

Production on A Haunting in Venice is set to commence in November with plans for an undated 2023 theatrical release. So, now that we have the cast if you’re wondering who will die then simply see who is the most famous person in the film and they’re dead. These murder mystery films are not good murder mystery film but to be honest, I’ll always be attracted to them as they remind me of the past where such films were a common ventures- big production, huge sets, ensemble casts, good old murder mystery.

I’d read both the novels for both the films once I saw them because well I wanted to see was the story or the execution’s fault. It was the execution. I’m glad there is a third movie like this. I didn’t think it’d happen after the second but I’m thrilled for it. Hopefully, this would be better than the previous two. Kenneth Branagh as Poirot has always been convincing and entertaining. Apart from Rian Johnson’s Knives out there are no murder mysteries anymore. So it is a dying genre. I like how Branagh is preserving it. Hope he does a better job.
