What would you do when you’re in your 80s (given that you’re still alive)? Well, maybe relax, spend your life’s savings, be grateful for each new day. That’s not how Martin Scorsese does it. The man is doing some of his best work now. What started with The Irishman is an unstoppable force finding resources and a platform to put out impactful stories. His newest venture – The Killers of the Flower Moon starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Brendan Fraser, Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, Louis Cancelmi and Lily Gladstone is releasing this October. Even before the film releases, the cinematic genius has no chill has he has already moved on to his next project. The man will keep producing cinema as long as he can. Let’s find out everything about Martin Scorsese’s next.
Martin Scorsese Will Reunite With Leonardo DiCaprio!
The legendary filmmaker will lend his directorial vision to an adaptation of The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann (the author of Killers of the Flower Moon book). The book was published just this year on April 18th. The reviews of the book are positive as it holds a 4.2/5 on Goodreads. The project already was announced last year but along with it Scorsese also wanted to do a film about Jesus and many more. It was unclear as to which will be his immediate next project post Killers of the Flower Moon.
Well, in an interview with The Times the director revealed that his next project to film is The Wager. It will star DiCaprio and mark another collaboration between the filmmaker and Apple Original Films. Each collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio sees the actor in new light. In Shutter Island, DiCaprio portrayed a tortured detective, Wolf of Wall Street saw the actor become a drug fueled stockbroker and Killers of the Flower Moon shows him as a nefarious criminal. DiCaprio clearly likes to reinvent himself with each new role, The Wager won’t be any different.
The synopsis of the novel reads, “The real events that befell the crew of HMS Wager, a ship of the British Royal Navy that was wrecked on a deserted island in 1741 off the coast of what is now Chile.” It is unclear which role Scorsese has in mind for the Oscar winning actor, but it’s possible that he will be playing Captain David Cheap. After being stranded on the island, much of Cheap’s crew mutinied against him, abandoning him and several of his loyal sailors on what would subsequently become known as Wager Island.
The Wager will be Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s seventh collaboration (except for one short film). The director-actor duo have worked prior to this on Wolf of Wall Street, Killers of the Flower Moon, Shutter Island, The Aviator, The Departed and Gangs of New York. This will be Martin Scorsese’s 28th feature length film along with his seven documentaries.
The Wager doesn’t have a release date as of now but don’t miss out Killers of the Flower Moon in theatres near you on 20th October 2023.
