Netflix has now revealed the first look and trailer of Matilda: The Musical releasing in December 2022. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming British musical. The movie is directed by Matthew Warchus and based on the stage musical of the same name written by Dennis Kelly. A well-known comedian and musician, Tim Minchin, has been roped in to compose the music for Matilda: The Musical.
Working Title Films, a studio known for producing other musicals such as Billy Elliot, Les Miserables, and the infamous adaptation of Cats, will be carrying out the production of the Netflix Original. The musical will be one of many Roald Dahl adaptations now in development at Netflix, which also includes a Taika Waititi-directed animated series. Catch the official teaser of the movie below.
Matilda The Musical: Everything We Know So Far
Matilda was initially set to premiere on Netflix in 2021, but it will now be released in December 2022, reports Playbill. The musical will come to theatres on December 2nd, 2022, across the United Kingdom and Ireland. Meanwhile, the film will be released as a Netflix original in select locations around the globe.
The plot was announced, along with the first look of the movie. The synopsis of the new take on the stage musical reads: “Matilda Wormwood (Weir) is a little girl with big curiosity, a sharp mind and a vivid imagination – and the worst parents in the world. While her parents (Graham and Riseborough) content themselves with trashy TV and dodgy money-making schemes, she loves to lose herself in the pages of her beloved books. Where they are loud, selfish and unkind she is a quiet observer, thinking up small and cheeky acts of rebellion and revenge.”
In previous Matilda productions, it was conventional for a male cast member to play Miss Trunchbull, the cruel headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School. This will, however, change for the film version, as Emma Thompson has been cast in place of Ralph Fiennes. Although the reason for Ralph Fiennes’ departure from the role has not been disclosed, we’re confident he would have made a delightful Miss Trunchbull.
Miss Honey’s role had previously been offered to Emma Stone, but the part has subsequently been filled by Lashana Lynch, whom Marvel fans will remember from Captain Marvel, as Maria Rambeau. The actress is also known for her role as Nomi in the James Bond film No Time to Die.
