Robert Downey Jr.’s return as MCU‘s Iron Man received a promising update. Ever since Iron Man made the ultimate sacrifice to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, fans have been asking for the return of Downey Jr.’s character. Fans have been drawing up theories for when the MCU OG could make a comeback. Though Marvel Studios confirmed he is “no longer on the table” as a regular MCU character, Downey Jr. has kept a “never say never” attitude about a potential comeback. A recent report from Variety exploring Marvel’s latest behind-the-scenes troubles disclosed the studio has decided to bring back Tony Stark for a future Avengers movie.
MCU’s Robert Downey Jr. Might Return as Iron Man
Though the report is clear, the studio has yet to commit to the notion. There have been conversations to reunite with the original MCU Avengers team, including Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow. However, bringing back Iron Man may be a costly task as the actor was paid a massive $25 million for his last solo Iron Man 3.
For a long time, fans have expected Iron Man to return, whether through some form of resurrection or time-traveling into the past. The new report claims genuine talks at Marvel Studios about bringing back not just Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, but the entire cast of original Avengers. Though it sounds great, the continuous critical and financial struggle of the studio, a movie with the original Avengers may reek of desperation from Disney. It’s common in Marvel Comics for characters to come and go over the year, with few deaths being permanent. While, many were expecting the same for Downey’s character, considering the present situation of the studio, this kind of return should have a legitimate reason.
If Marvel Studios decides to bring back the original Avengers, it would be a costly investment. Secret Wars is by far the obvious space for such a crossover of the old and new. That Multiversal event is unlikely to occur until May 7, 2027. However, with the MCU’s focus currently on Jonathan Major’s Kang, the Avengers plan would probably get pushed back into 2028.
The next Avengers movie The Kang Dynasty will hit theatres on May 1, 2026.
