Meg 2: The Trench Is A Success Despite Bad Reviews!
Warner Bros. is not having a good year at the box office. Their biggest investments of the year so far have turned out to be rotten eggs (in terms of box office collections)- Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash and Blue Beetle. Their box office success this year is short lived, except, for Barbie- the film that is on track to become the highest grossing film of the year. Now, along with that another unexpected film is performing well at the box office for the studio.
Meg 2: The Trench has stormed past the $300 million milestone worldwide, with over $250 million gathered from international markets. The film collected $6.7 in its domestic third weekend, dropping a commendable 48%. However, out of this the domestic markets have only contributed $66.7 million. The film won’t even cross $100 million in North America. On the other hand, China alone has contributed $90 million thus far reflecting the popularity of these films in the region.
Just like it’s predecessor, Meg 2 is made on a budget of $130 million and has to make $400 million to break even. If current market trends are to believed then this shouldn’t be a difficult task. Only time will tell.
Along with Jason Statham the film stars Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai and Sienna Guillory. The sequel is directed by Ben Wheatley with the screenplay from Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris, based on the 1999 novel The Trench by Steve Alten.
