Get ready to see a live-action version of your favorite bald-headed hero! Justin Lin is all set to helm a live-action adaptation of the global hit Japanese manga and anime series One Punch Man for Sony Pictures. The acclaimed director (who is most known for Better Luck Tomorrow, Star Trek Beyond, and the Fast & Furious franchise) had recently announced his departure from Fast X due to a “major disagreement” with superstar and producer Vin Diesel. The news of Lin’s exit was confirmed just days after the film’s production began.
One Punch Man chronicles the adventures of Saitama, a superhero capable of taking down anyone with a single punch. He eventually gets bored of the lack of challenges in his fight against evil and seeks a suitable opponent. Originally published as a webcomic in 2009 before becoming popular, the series was adapted into a manga series in 2012. One-Punch Man has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, and the series has been translated into many languages. It went on to receive an anime adaptation, which spawned two seasons in 2015 and 2019.
What We Know So Far About The One Punch Man Movie
Sony initially announced the upcoming live-action One Punch Man adaptation in April 2020 after the studio acquired the film rights from Shueisha and looks to kick off a potential franchise, reports Deadline. Fans will have to wait a bit more as the film’s cast and release date are yet to be announced.
Avi Arad and Ari Arad of Arad Productions are producing the film alongside Lin. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, who previously worked together on Jumanji: The Next Level and Venom for Sony, will write the script for the feature-length adaptation of the popular manga series, with Lin reportedly planning for a rewrite and for production to begin by the end of the year.
Following One Piece, Gundam, and Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix, One Punch Man is the latest manga and anime franchise to get the live-action treatment. A live-action Cowboy Bebop adaptation was launched on Netflix in November for one season before being cancelled less than a month later.
